Hi,
I putting some of that fake stone on a 3ft high block patio wall. The directions say it’s ok to go straight over CB with no prep, however, I have 5, 12″x12″x36″ pedestals that I constructed with 2×4 pt and cement board. Can I take that as the same as the block? The instruction say to cover with vapour barrier and lath. I’m thinking that if it’s on a house it will need the vapor barrier and then need the lath so the stone will adhere. I don’t need the barrier so will I still need the lath? or will it stick just fine to the cement board? It also says in the instructions to overlap corners min 16″. I only have 12″.

I've done it with Durarock.
Not as good as lath, and I'm not sure I'd go that route again.
But it has functioned fine for ten years or so.
Use a bonding agent for sure. Also keep the board moist as
it will suck your mud dry way to fast.
Not sure what your overlapping?
They wanted the lath to go around the corners at least 16", overlap the corner.
Well, no lath-no lap I suppose.
For an exterior application, instead of cement board, have you considered using Permabase? It is what we use for substrate prior to stucco coatings in commercial applications in my area (Ohio). Better than using regular cement board. Comes in both 1/2" and 5/8"
