Hey Everyone,
I have a question concerning appplying a stucco finish over exsisting red brick.
I am purchasing a block built home. The sides and rear of the house have a stucco
finish directly over the block. The front of the home has red brick, and a flagstone
looking rock applied to the block base/wall. The block was “set back” enough on the
monolithic slab foundation to allow for this. It is a full size standard red brick set in a
running bond course from sill to topplate. For whatever reason (poor taste?) about
1/4 of the wall (upper left section…see attached photo) was covered with a thick
rock. The block is beneath this, looking at the wall from the side edge it’s visible,
so I belive the brick serves only a decrorative purpose. My question is this:
Is it acceptable to fur the wall out using 2×2’s attached with masonry screws, and
then foamboard and lathe for stucco? Could I potentially just lathe and stucco the
exsisting wall, or are all the individual brick joints vunerable to expansion/contraction
and eventually bad cracking in the stucco coat? The home is located in S.E. Arizona,
so we don’t see much snow…just lots of sun. Any advice or ideas would be very
much appreciated. I have attached a photo…but it’s very dark/poor. I would
consider removing the brick and rock, but it seems very stable and stout, I’m
afraid I might do more harm than good in removing it. The stucco would only be
cosmetic, in an effort to unify the outside apperance of the home. Thank You
in advance for your input.
