The instructions on the Aqua Glaze package says “prime all unpainted wood.” Any idea why? (I asked the company by email but haven’t heard back yet.)

If this is glazing putty, then it's because unprimed wood will suck the oils out of the putty, prematurely drying it out.
Same goes for latex caulking-you need to have a finish or primer on the bare wood.
Because otherwise the glazing will fall out in about 2 years.
What other finishes will form an adequate barrier?
In "Beautify Doors with Divided Light" (FWW #217), Mario Rodriguez used an alcohol-soluble dye on muntins of walnut, but I don't know what type of finish he applied before using the Aqua Glaze. That article appeared a year and a half ago; I wonder how the glazing is holding up.

Shelac is sometimes used.
The manufacturer responded to my email.
"Using Aqua Glaze on the stained wood will be fine."

If you don't want it to stick, yeah.
Never heard of Latex caulk meant to go on unfinished wood.....
New one on me.
All I know is, if you caulk wood to unprimed drywall, it works and looks like crap.
And you don't get the nice smooth smoosh on unpainted wood.
As for how it sticks long term? can't say-always apply it to primed or painted wood..................
It could be something for you to study and report back the news so we'll all know the whole story.
Me? We're off to the Fest tomorrow aftn and I've got too much to do till liftoff.
Have a good weekend.
