Just curious. About 2 years ago I replaced some 6″ square fluted columns on the front of a house. The owner wants to replace 8 identical columns that support a back porch and 4 additional columns in the front. In examining the columns in the front, I’m seeing some separation in the glue lines in the columns I fabricated. I used polyurethane Elmers to glue up the rabbets – no dowels or biscuits. I built and replaced three columns. Since he wants to replace all of the other columns, I’m going to replace the columns that are showing separation – not much bigger than hair line. The owner didn’t even notice but I did.
I have not used any of the epoxy glues like the West system. Would they be better for this application than the urea formaldehyde glues. I’m going to use one or the other. The polyurethanes are banished to interior work.
Anyone with experience with the epoxy products?
Thanks in advance,
Joe
