The wife is thinking about starting a small architectural salvage company. How would one go about it? We live in northeastern Ontario. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Try a google search for "Urban Ore" and "Omega Salvage". Both are salvage companies in Berkeley, California with successful but different set-ups.
My impression is that business requires an awful lot of storages space, relative to the value of the stuff you're storing. Can you sell the stuff for enough to pay for storing it, in addition to all the other costs of running a business.
try http://www.blackdogsalvage.com/ they are in VA. Been round for several years. Must be doing something right.
Bryan,
Here is one in Nova Scotia to have a look at

I've got an inlaw who just sold his out. It's a lot of hard work for the money.

The trick is to be the first one to salvage the stuff. I know a co. that has deals with demolition - major demolition - co.s and he flys all over the country and to get into bldgs before they come down or are renovated. That's where you get the really good and big stuff. There is a fee for this and sometimes his window is only a week (or less) long. Aside from storage, sniffing out where the veins of diamonds are to be mined is pretty much a major part of the job. But once you've been doing it for a while you develope a nose for this.
I know a couple of bldgs in NYC where I have a standing deal with the super.s for salvaging various hardware that is no longer avaiable. Develope relationships, relationships, relationships.
In other words, it takes time to build.
Excellence is its own reward!
And un-build!
Do the customers bring you the stuff or do you pick the stuff up?
These pick up runs. Do you wait for the people to leave or just pull on ski masks and carry crow bars?
Have you found it better to just pay off the police or is it better to invest the money into the truck engine and outrun them?
