Architectural Shingle ridge detail?

I feel stupid asking this question, but I can’t seem to figure this out myself. I just put a new IKO architectural shingle roof on my garage and I can’t figure out what the ridge detail should be. If it were 3-tab I’d know what to do, but when I look at other archectural shingle roofs in the neighborhood I’m pretty sure they didn’t just cut the shingle in thirds and bend it over the ridge as you’d with a tab. I’m equally sure that they didn’t cut the shingle in half the long way and use the upper (normally hidden) half in thirds because the color is wrong.
Is there a special ridge cap shingle I should have bought along with the regular shingles? Am I wrong about what others have done?
Thanks in advance for the answers.

Yes, you need to use the Iko hip-and-ridge shingle components for your ridge. The archicturals, like the Chateau, won't do it.
Your supplier has them in stock, most likely.
I just get 3-tab in the same color, and cut them normally (into thirds; taper the tops) - maybe halve the exposure or vary it 0-4 inches to "lumpify" or break up the ridge line somewhat. Also cut the 3-tabs to use for starters - it's cheaper.

I agree with you about the ridges/hips, done with 3-tab. I just don't like the look of the high profile hips I see.zak

Well,
you can do it either way, but the three tabs don't have the same warranties that the architectural shingles do. Plus the right ridge caps have a raised rear portion that keeps the same look that the rest of the shingles have.
The caps are a little pricey but worth it in the long run.
