Well, we had to cover a boo-boo that the framers and masons left us..and paint wasn’t the best option. So we thunk it over and knew we had to copper it and transmorgifie into the reglets walking up the parapet.
Just slamming on a sheet of copper was nuthin we wanted to do..so we took a chance ( there is a tight schedule, and we were told we can’t get fancy on the dormers) and fabbed up a few STARS to dress it up a bit. View Image
Each side of the parapet is now thusly adorned….and now we have orders for quite a few more!
Oh, and our “war wagon” trailer needed two new wheels, so we scarfed a Lull to make the pit stop faster…

Sphere,
Nice touch , I like it.
DT, I am blessed to play with a NOBLE element, after many years of wood and fibrous convolutions.
Copper has no grain, but it does have a memory...you really only have one shot to get it right, you cant just glue a patch on a boo-boo, you cant use putty or paint.
I approach each day, with a plan..and sometimes it works, sometimes it don't.
I'd have to say, "exacting" of detail is most important, one has to be anal in one's approach, scrap is not gonna pay my bills, nor put feathers in Grant's bed. So, a bit of scrap, a bit of time....all equals that we are "special" LOL like a short school bus type, but special just the same..
I still can't quite fathomn that I went from a Luthier/Organ builder/ furniture maker to a copper smith, in 3 yrs.
There is that paradox again...we are wedding the two.
More to come.
And Thank You.Parolee # 40835
Not only does the star look great; but I love those perfectly spaced step flashing. One my pet peeves is steps that are randomly spaced.
Great work!
I didn't have a hand on them..our new guy did that work. He was FAST, I swear he stomped out a 20' rake like that in about 3 hours.
Kerfing in the mortar joints and plugging in the wedges, riveting the tails and geocelling the gaps..this guy is good.Parolee # 40835
Everybody out there is hoping the owner will like the stars.http://grantlogan.net/
Looks good from here.

What's not to like? Those things look great.Remodeling contractor who once visited the Glass City.
>>>>>>>>What's not to like? Those things look great.Yeah, they do. But they weren't on the plans and this is our first job for this commercial GC. The owner has paid a lot of money to an archy to tell him what he wants. Dale and Sphere took liberties, but to be honest, that big expanse of copper wasn't supposed to be there. Looked awkward, so they fixed it. No charge. We'll see what happens.http://grantlogan.net/
Well, if they puke over them, I can go there and drill out the 10 rivets and refill the holes on my dime. Take a chance on something, or miss your chance is our mantra.Parolee # 40835
seeyou, If the archy is any good at all he will like your solution and give it due praise.
If not drill him .
>>>>>>>but I love those perfectly spaced step flashing. The reason they're perfectly spaced is that I make them in the shop all the same. All the guy on the roof has to do is grind the reglet in the right place, slip them in, rivet and caulk.http://grantlogan.net/
Yeah, you deserve a lot of credit for that whole job.
I might ask tho' that we go back to your 16oz steps ( not reglets as previously mis-noted). Them 12 oz from ABC are just, well, not what we like.
They guy at ABC swore they are 16oz, but both Dale and I don't agree on that. Maybe a 14 oz exists?Parolee # 40835
>>>>>>>>>>They guy at ABC swore they are 16oz, but both Dale and I don't agree on that. Maybe a 14 oz exists? They're 12 oz and they'll outlast the shingles they're flashing. I have to bid against others and I have to be on the same playing field.http://grantlogan.net/
See, these are things we don't know about. We take a lot for granted. I'll be the first one to take the heat for any screw ups, because I am the newest, lack of knowledge is my forte', I just bring a differnt look to the situations, because I have not been taught wrong yet.
I'd rather hire a guy with zero exp, than one who has had a bad teacher, and followed that method.
I have seen it over and over, best intentions, lousy skills. And I am sure you have too. Or Lousy intentions, great skills. Either way, when the rubber hits the road, somebody has to be in the middle of that road, either dodging the traffic, or controlling it in a manner that makes sense.
I'd like your take, on the prospective venture of Dale and Duane LLC. So would he. You guys have a past together, I am just the new blood, bless us or warn us. is all we ask.Parolee # 40835
>>>>>>>>>>I'd like your take, on the prospective venture of Dale and Duane LLC. So would he. You guys have a past together, I am just the new blood, bless us or warn us. is all we ask.Do a search here of advice on partnerships. All I can do is wish you luck.http://grantlogan.net/
I have. And believe me, there is a LOT to digest.
We'll, always be there for you, you know that.
It is ironic, that when we first met, we absoluty hated each other..we were too much alike, and ego's clashed. Now, I couldn't ask for a better buddy than Dale. Thank You.Parolee # 40835
If you want to stay buddies. Don't become partners.

Yes, a point to ponder, but we don't really have many other ideers kicking around.
I have the age over him, and he has the brawn over me. Niether of us are very good at business ( LOL?), but we are highly creative, both together, and apart.
I dunno where we are headed...I guess we need to define that before much else can be addressed.
He wants to expand to getting into the underground piping from the down spouts ( so he has an excuse to buy a BIG truck,a nd a Bobcat)..and I want to incorporate copper and wood in the , well, artistic venue.
In the mean time, we have to eat, so we Gutter and roof, but we make a game of it, how can we get faster and better! It's always about that..and that is what makes it fun..except for that last job..there was very little fun, due to site conditions, and weather.
Stay tuned to your local BT station, I'll have more questions than answers I think.Parolee # 40835
>>>>>>>>>He wants to expand to getting into the underground piping from the down spouts ( so he has an excuse to buy a BIG truck,a nd a Bobcat). There's a lot of landscaping outfits and plumbers trying to keep their machinery running doing that stuff. Pretty competitive.http://grantlogan.net/
Yeah, I don't see it happening in MY dream. He has the gusto to fly, I am trying to kickback and be more, well, what I do best, I create. I create chaos and havoc and.. stuff..LOL
I have about 40K$ in a woodshop sitting here, not being utilized to it's fullest extent. My fault. I abandoned it, to follow a new venture with you and he, and re-tooled, re-educated, and re-invented my self. I kinda miss my old self.Parolee # 40835
I see a train wreck happening. But nobody talks anybody out of doing anything they have their heart set on. We can only hold your hand after the divorce. But you know these guys. "I told you you were stupid! Anyway the only thing I can say is if you like the guy don't get involved with money with him.
PS We took the old ladies nieces home yesterday and they called this morning. One of them had found a tick on her. Started checking the wife. Pulled two out of her so far. It's Tick season already.
Who dares, wins.

I found my first one of the season about 2 weeks ago. I hate them.
Good advice on the othert subject. talked it over w the DW, and she agrees w/you.Parolee # 40835

Hummm, did I noticed a lull in the conversation?
Well, yes you did.
Viktor ( from Ukraine-ova) helped out, snagged the Lull and picked up the trailer. I mean he almost tore off the hitch, cus we were hooked to the truck...oooops.
The funny think about Viktor is his Russian accent..we asked him "where are you from"? He says.." I m from Tennesee, befor dat I am from Soudth Carolina, an before dat,I was fron the Houston, texassss..."
We jokingly said, " yeah, we knew the accent was from Tennesse"
"Bud, cho doan nowe, before dat, I wass in Poooooertland, Orrrregon, and fiffffteem yerz in da Washington"
"Ok"? Wtf? we said
"Oh and DEN you want to know, I vas born in the Ukrain, of Soviet RRRRUssia"
He hot wired the Lull, so we could do the tire change on the both sides at once.Parolee # 40835
Your russian phonetics are very funny. I can hear him spe-king-nga.
Say do you ever do an etch followed by a urathane finish? I helped do that on a copper shingled roof, about fifteen years ago. Kept in looking very clean and bright for a long time. Took about three coats of urathane though.
Thanks LOL.
No, we have not yet delved into any sort of finishing, maybe in the future, with some of our new ideas.
I an currantly working on a press/brake/stamping device that will be able to hydraulically ( or wine press screw) stamp out stuff like cieling panels for drop cielings, or things like them stars.
I just destroyed my vacuum veneering bag trying to suck down a scrap of copper over a form, I left off a hunk of cardboard so I could see the progress, and a sharp edge punctured the bag..DOH!Parolee # 40835
Looks great to my eye.
the star ... not the trailer!
like I was taught ... if U can't hide it ... highlight it.

Very cool, Sphere! Does the copper stay shiny like that or does it eventually go to verdigris?

It 'll all get brown-ish in a few weeks, and stay that way for many yrs. I've not been playing with anything long enough to have turned green yet. I bet some of Grant's older stuff may have.Parolee # 40835
