It’s design came from a picture in Fine Woodworking by Bruce VanSledright. The photo of his cabinet shows the pencil scratches of my effort to scale up his to what I would need.
His measures 15 1/8″dp x 26″w x 45″ tall. Mine measures 12 1/4″d x 39″w x 84″tall. The interior of the cabinet extends back through the wall into the garage. The garage side is walled off to hide the cabinet as well as the two cabinets on each side that extend into the garage also.
It took so long because I ran out of CheChen when it came to the style & rails for the doors. I finally gave up waiting for it and chose to make the doors from Makore’, stained to match.
The glass came from a local stain glass company.

Cool project - funky glass!
Was this a personal project or commission work?
Justin Fink - FHB Editorial
I wish this one was a commission piece, this was a personnel project. I don't know if any of my clients would have put up with waiting so long.
It is going into my portfolio to use selling my work. It helps to have a wife who keeps her name, that way when I say I did this for Ms Whitney, it sounds better than saying I did this for my wife.
Cool....looks great......I would put that in my house....send 'er on over.
ps. pack the tv separate.
You got it. You'll send a check, right?
If I had known when I started how shallow tv's would become I might not have gone as deep into the wall.
I am glad I did though, considering the drawers are full depth 24" and two of them are just big enough for all my daughters Disney films.
It's ahhh..... in the mail.....yeah.....that's right....in the mail.
I like, I like......Husband does stained glass work......
Your wife is lucky!
Very nice! There is a big market for A&C style furniture. There are a good number of posts asking for the magic Good-Quality-But-Cheap-Price posts at American Bungalow and other A&C sites
...that's not a mistake, it's rustic
ButtCheap? The price reflects the quality.
The piece looks nice.
Very funky glass
I might suggest cleaning your cameral lens though... spots in the same spot of each photo ;)
Oh I know! I get tired of people trying to justify a cheap knock off furniture set as "looks almost as good for a lot less". No it doesn't. The good stuff costs money. What you have there is good stuff....that's not a mistake, it's rustic
Ya we both agree, but even with my knowledge of what constitute a well made piece and what it should cost I bought a dining set that was unusually cheap for it's looks. It was a craftsman style with two armed and 6 regular chairs, all a fumed looking ash. The table extends out just over nine feet. Cost me just over a grand. I would have expected $4-5000. But this icon of Americana was made in China. The jurys out as to wether I got good quality for the price, so far so good. I am wrestling with the guilt of supporting outsourcing.
It is a tough market. I have sat in dining room chairs that I wouldn't sit an enemy in. They cost as much as the reproduction Stickley pieces. ...that's not a mistake, it's rustic
Hi there BungalowJeff.....
Does the name reflect a strong interest in A&C, or just a coincidence?
very fine workone hidden beauty in this is one will feel compelled to leave doors closed ( thereby eliminating TV viewing ) and appreciate the natural wood and craftsmanshipyou be looking at that glass in the right door
sokmething be watchin you
maybe came through your garage
You scared me ...
three little drops of pee came out!
Yeah, I am in a 100 year old bungalow. I call my house my hobby, because then all the time and money seems less painful.
I am interested in all aspects of the A&C realm. I just have the unfortunate timing of getting into it after the popular explosion. You can furnich an entire room with reproductions for the cost of one antique chair these days....that's not a mistake, it's rustic
My Fav style also. Did my first "Craftsman" house in 1988. Great stuff, love the lighting especially..
The furniture prices are up there, but have you seen the pottery prices?
My wife is usually the conservative, but she shelled out $$$ for a 4" high round Teco round bud vase. It is so thin and the curves are so perfect, only a true A&C fan would understand.
I really like the metal work too. I dig the European and Art Nouveau stuff that you see in Style 1900 magazine....that's not a mistake, it's rustic
Yeah......style 1900 is cool. Met David Rago once.....nice guy, knows his stuff w/ pottery.......he's one of the experts on "Antiques Road Show".
Other nice pubs are American Bungalow, and Old House Interiors-new Arts & Crafts bi-annual.
My current home is an 1852 GReek Revival, so I don't have too much A&C stuff in it.
My friend and his DW were moving her great aunt, and they found an old rocker in the basement. They kept it because of it's size (it's kinda small, and he's 6'-5").....did not know what they had until I saw it.....orig Stickley....cool little chair.
Back in the early '90s, a buddy of mine mentioned to a friend that he wanted a nice arm chair to strum his guitar in. A rocker would be nice, but they're too wimpy looking. She told him she would find him a chair on her next trip south. Picked him up a Stickley rocker for $100. She also told him to hold onto it because it looked like the market for it was going to explode soon. Now I know why I liked her so much....that's not a mistake, it's rustic
Went to an "antique" furniture store out in PA.
DW fell in love w/ some dark "grayish" mission furniture. Looked nice...not too much $$. Got suspicious.
I pulled a drawer........dove tail (one) on each side....rough work.....made in china.
Darn!
Very nice work. did you stick-and-cope for the window lites with the same profile as the rails next to the panel?
That wood must have cost a pretty penny.
zak
The styles and rails are mortise and tenon. The mulls are just butted. Actually at the time the CheChen was very affordable. The glass cost more per foot but then there is only two feet needed.
jag....nice stuff brotha.
I'm gonna have to stop talkin' smack about you.
Seriously though....real nice. Oughtta be damned proud.

Very nice.
The panel grain mimics the glass.
It has flow.
And the dimensions are very pleasing.
Excellent work!
Gord
Thank you
WOW....way nice!!!! I love it. Almost need a few more complimentry pieces in the same room now its so inspiring...I know I know...shuttin' up.
Looks like it was fun to make actually...very rewarding all through out the project I'm guessing.
