My finished basement floor is tiled with what I think may be asbestos tiles (the house was built in ’66 and I think the tiles are original). We had some water in the basement, and are in the process of having that problem fixed. I want to put ceramic tiles down and want to know whether I need to remove all of the asbestos tiles first. A few are loose from the water already and have to be removed. I am concerned that other original tiles will become loose later and cause a problem with the ceramic tiles over it. I am also concerned about the health effects of removing the asbestos tiles. I would appreciate any suggestions.

J,
If you opt for removing them, you might consider calling an asbestos removal contractor as they'll have all the right equipment to do it safely. Be prepared as this will not be cheap.
Another option would be to cover them all with cement tile backerboard (i.e. leaving them in place)and lay your tile upon that. They are pros and cons for each option so its up to you (and your wallet). ;)

*I believe that you will find that the asbestos in floor tile is encapsulated in the tile material just as asbestos shingle encapsulates the asbestos. If that is the case, the asbestos is not released unless you grind it or drill it. In the cases that I am aware of, asbestos shingle siding does not require the full asbestos abatement protection for removal and disposal. I think that it's been addressed here. Use the search button. If you have had water problems and some tile is loose, the rest are probably ready to pop up with little or no breakage.Check your local codes. It might not be too bad.BJ
*J You might try having the tile tested for asbestos. I had some floor tile in my attic that sure looked like asbestos but turned out not to be. Only cost 25 bucks for peace of mind and no fears during tear out. Nick
*Just remember to check the glue that the tiles are stuck down with. I have seen a lot of cases where the tile is okay but the glue is hazardous.
