Good morning all,
I’m helping a friend of mine with some work at his house and behind the siding that was torn off we found a sheathing material that I am not familiar with and I was hoping to identify it and know if it contains asbestos or not. I didn’t have a camera with me, so I’ll try to describe it.
It is 3/4″ thick, 4×8′ sheets, the exterior side looks and feels like a tar impregnated paper. The interior of the board is pretty much fibers and dust. Does this sound familiar to anyone? Could this sheathing contain asbestos?
By the way, as far as I can tell, this work is from the 1940’s or 50’s, and the sheathing in question is behind cement shingles that do contain asbestos.
Any help is appreciated.

Sounds like Celotex building board to me. It is made out of bagasse (fibers left after sugar cane is pressed). I know Celotex was involved in asbestos, but I don't know about that product. My guess would be no, but if it were me I'd do more research to know for sure.
Thanks, I'll look into that and check it out to be sure.
You can have it tested if you want to be sure. The labs only need a very small piece and it is not expensive.

If it is friable dust, while waiting for test results, treat it as tho it is asbestos.
P-100 masks, gloves, misting to keep the dust down, vacumn, etc
And don't wear the clothes in the house near kids.
