Hello,
I’m aware asbestos used to be used in some situations in plaster – such as on fireplace surrounds. I am demo’ing a large area of plaster ceiling soon in a house from the late 1800’s. Does anyone know the likelihood asbestos may have been used in the plaster? I feel that it is very unlikely but have only recently become aware that asbestos was used in plaster at all.
Thanks!

It is probably reinforeced with something.
The late 1880's to 1890's is about when it started to show up frequently.
Prior to that horse hair was fairly common.
The only way to know for sure is have a piece tested.
With a place that old, the surface paint probably has lead in it too, so follow safe practice for lead and you are covered.
