Asphalt shingle question

Sunburst | Posted in General Discussion on June 7, 2008 02:39am

I have a job where homeowner wants 50 yr archs, but doesn’t want to use the Tamko brand that my roofer uses. Do you guys have any certain brands you like? I’ve always used Tamkos. Thanks

I like Tamko's as well. Your profile doesn't say where you are. My favorite shingle is Certainteed, but there have been some problems in the past with Certainteeds in the midwest. I don't like GAF's, but in other parts of the country, they seem to be the shingle of choice. This is a question probably better answered localy.

    What's his beef with Tamko's?

Yeah I was thinking Certainteed too, I know the suppliers around here in Delaware carry lots of them. I guess the homeowner had some problems in the past on another house with tamko's so they are just ruling them out. Thanks.

your certainteeds will probably come out of the same plants as ours.... NC if i recallwe use certainteeds exclusivelyMike Smith Rhode Island : Design / Build / Repair / Restore

my beef with Tamko--is that they have a really horribly fakey looking shadow line--to my eye it looks like a black blotch.Certainteed and GAF/Elk---have a much more natural look.Recently did a job---Certainteed Landmark Tri-laminates.
color was I think "sienna sunrise"---from the roof---ugliest looking color imaginable----but from the ground----far and away the best fake shake I have seen yetFrom the ground---subtleties of color, simply not visible from the roof.
i am kind of p.Oed however--if we had used regular lifetime Landmarks- i would have got about a $4/sq. rebate$116/sq. trilaminates--and NO effeng rebate!!!!!Stephen

          , LOL---hey---it would have been $168.
last year we got rebates--all the way down to 30 year landmarks i think--from the manufacturer.
plus the supplier gave us gas cards in roughly the same amount--Ka-ching.I wasn't even thinking about rebates this year---untill last week I saw the form on the suppliers counter.
figured i was gonna make a nice little score----- a couple, three thousand bucks based on last years rebates------no such luck---looking at the fine print-----this time I have $42 comming.

"My favorite shingle is Certainteed, but there have been some problems in the past with Certainteeds in the midwest. "Define Midwest. That term has been very badly missused..

I reserve the right to missuse the term "midwest".

Define "missuse". The word "missuse" often gets missused. In fact, I'm probably missusing it right now. http://grantlogan.net

bill, I define the midwest as the "center of the universe" we have ample farm land, livable cities, major league sports and most important-Great Lakes water other regions might be nice to visit---by why would i want to live there????Best wishes, from the heart of it all,

Well you are close.Mid West was orginally used in the early 1800's when it was OH, MI, IN, IL.Now it seems to be used for anything from the alliganies to the rocky's..

I've used Certainteed, Tamco and GAF/Elk.  I usually use the GAF's but depends on client spec, etc.

I prefer BP shingles. Quality control is very consistent, not just from one batch to the next, but from one year to the next. I can buy a pack for a repair years after the original job was done and not have to dork around with trimming or cheating to make it fit into the old courses. Can't do that with IKOs.

Plus, their '10-year' shingles last 20 years on average. Not bad for ~$60/square....

Just what is the rate of exchange now anyways, and is it affected by your body mass?

It is not affected by my body mass (good thing for the global economy!) but it definitely seems to be affected by which way I want to trade.

Whenever I have extra greenbacks lying around and want to buy some loonies with 'em, the value of the US$ goes down. And vice versa, of course....
