Atrium Doors

| Posted in General Discussion on April 29, 2004 07:11am

Customer wants to replace a 5′ slider with an inswing door. He has been to the big orange monster and scoped out an Atrium door at around $500.00. I’ve tried to push him towards an Anderson or therma tru but its about 3 times the price and he wants to know why.  Depot guesses at what Atriums warrenty is…. my that’s reassuring….and it is a special order item….now I’m really not comfortable….

Does anyone have experience with this door? is it worth the money saved since labor to install should be about the same…..

Or should I recommend, if that’s the door he has to have, he has to get someone else to install it.

Thanks.

    Pass on that one...

HO's and big boxes make for a poor mix...

Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming....

                                            WOW!!!   What a Ride!

That's the way I'm leaning. I did find the warrenty.

      1 year on parts.

      10 year on glass...you install.

      after 10 glass is prorated.

Also I discussed this with my brother who reminded me he tried to find old parts before and some lumberyard in the NE bought all the old crap they don't support after 1 year, and since there was so many changes the only way to match anything you had to send broken part  to them...and when they got time they'd check.

Seems they don't think much of their own product.

i wouldnt touch it, ive installed products from hd, and they suck

do they buy seconds???? sure seems like it

    my experience:

    2 whirlpool tubs, both leaked

"kraft maid" cabinets so out of square couldnt be installed, craft made my butt

    screen doors out of square

countertops no where even close to flat

    and on and on

so i wouldnt touch it, tell them to get a door from your regular supplier, pay some extra and at least you wont have to redo it next year

Seconds, thirds, however many times someone will buy and return the thing, they don't care.

      I never met a tool I didn't like!

I wonder if Atriums from a "reputable supplier" are any better than the Atriums from HD. The Rep that frequents our office carries Atriums as well as several of the more expensive brands.Kevin Halliburton

It looks like they bough out a bankrupt company.

            http://www.atriumcompanies.com/Press_Releases/Danvid/danvid.asp

DALLAS, TX, April 3, 2003 -- Atrium Companies, Inc. (“Atrium” or the “Company”), one of the largest non-wood window manufacturers in the United States, today announced that it has acquired substantially all of the assets of Danvid Window Company (“Danvid”), a wholly-owned subsidiary of American Architectural Products Corporation (“AAPC”), for approximately $5.5 million in cash and the assumption of certain liabilities. The proceeds used to complete the transaction were funded through the Company’s revolving credit facility. The assets of Danvid have been acquired out of bankruptcy (with both Danvid and AAPC operating as a debtor-in-possession under Chapter 11) pursuant to an auction sale under Sections 363 and 365 of the Bankruptcy Code.

sometimes in everybodys reply about  hd  you have to wonder how they stay in bussiness!!! anyway i have 3- 6' 9 lite atrium doors, wood inside metal clad out side that came from hd. they shut good ,look good. i installed these three and did the windows in anderson, the match on the dividers are almost perfect. when i was weighing different brands the anderson patio doors were 1800.00 more a piece times three! the 5400.00 savings almost made all the anderson windows free. i just felt that anderson was completely out of line with there price on patio doors. it will be interesting to see the 2 brands sit side by side  for 10 -15 yrs and see which performs best. larry

Is this an Atrium Door and Windows company product? http://www.atrium-rmd.com/

Or an Atrium Windows and Doors company product? http://www.atriumcompanies.com/

    Not the same company...

Is this the same Atrium as Atrium doors we purchased via Peachtree in 1980?  Bought a pair & fogged up the first 3 years, replaced via Peachtree.  16/17 years later had to completely replace as had rusted out (short overhang on our home is proably the reason?)  Bad part is had to order again via Peachtree as these were custom & no other company could provide same door options!

Now searching for similar type doors for new home & at Home Depot saw display that appeared to be affiliated with Andersen Windows?  I do not want these Home Depot doors if same manufacturing company as what we purchased in '80.  Might Atrium be a style rather than just a company name or are we running into the same manufacturing company?

Appreciate thoughts & experience with these doors!

"Might Atrium be a style rather than just a company name or are we running into the same manufacturing company?"Both!A antrium door is a generic term for a double wide door where one panel is fixed and the other one is hinged in the center. Also called center hinged doors, swinging patio doors and probably other terms. Also often miss called a "french door".And there is an Antrium Door company, that makes center swing doors, along with french doors, and sliders.

Atrium doors; Junk, garbage, crap, worst quality, Shortest life, U-name it!

They will fog up, rot, sag, crack. I even saw a vinyl clad atrium door fall apart because the wood core rotted AFTER ONE YEAR!

    Stay away!
