Attach Retractable Awning to Clapboard Sided House
I am going to attach a retractable awning to my house. The awning is 12 feet wide and can extend out to 10 feet. The awning weighs about 55 pounds. The awning will shade the deck which is attached to the first level. The house has cedar clapboard siding. The awning attachment brackets do not align with the wall studs so I will need to attach a ledger board to the siding, hitting the studs, and then attach the awning brackets to the ledger.
Looking for suggestions on the ledger. Should I install some clapboards upside down to ‘square’ the wall surface? Use a 2 X 8 or 2 X 10 for the ledger? Flash the top of the ledger? Bevel the top of the ledger? Caulk?
Thank You for your responses.

I'd cut a block to the same bevel as the siding for each stud that you need to fasten to. Bolt the ledger through the blocks to the studs. Slip metal flashing under the row of siding above so that it covers the ledger and hopefully overlaps the awning enough to keep water out. This should prevent moisture between the ledger and the siding.
Thank you. I forgot to mention (chalk it up to a senior moment) that the wall I will be attaching to is a Garrison/cantilever for the second floor. So there should be a header across the ends of the cantilevered 2 X 10 joists. Based on awning attachment height the ledger board will attach to the header and not to studs. Maybe cut blocks to the same bevel as the siding and attach awning brackets to the blocks and into the joist header?
Sounds like a fine idea to me
Thank You, again.
