Attaching Eastern White Cedar Siding
I am adding a lean-to shed (3 sides) to my garage and will be using Eastern White Cedar as the finished
siding on three sides. I plan to install the cedar vertically.
The underlayement is 7/16″ OSB with 1 x 4 furring strips added hoziontally at 2′ intervalls bottom to top.
The siding will be dimensioned 1 x 6 x 8′ and planned smooth and I have a choice of ship-lap, tounge and groove or square sides.
I am leaning toward the ship-lap version but am not sure where to nail (stainless steel nails) the siding to the furring.
Should I attach it only in the center (right to left) of each board at the furring or at the ship-lap connection.
Does it really matter where it should be nailed? The siding will be unfinished (i.e. no stain or other finish).
Thanks
Marty

you should nail only one side...the clamping side
make sure your nail only goes thru one board
this allows the board to expand and contract
i would not leave it unfinshed ..at the minimum i'd give it a coat of stain on all 6 sides
before installing
Installing Eastern White Cedar
Not sure what you mean by "clamping side". If use shiplap siding just where would I nail and/or screw
the board down?

Furring
Mike is right-on, one fastener only. If your studs are 24" OC, the furring could be a little bouncy. You could add blocking behind the between the studs or use a stainless steel screw instead of nails. This would pull all three layers of material tightly together.
Seems to me that a 12-foot stick would kinda flap around with only one fastener.
Clamping Side
The "clamping side" would be the side that laps over the previous board. The fastener should be placed so that it does not hit the previous board, therefore allowing each individual board to move independently.
Good Luck!
Hi,
Its exactly what I had to deal with, amongst my patio covers awnings project, ...I nailed only one side, but remember it must go through the board.
And remember it is very important stain it or add a coat to all sides.
