I've never done 4" on exterior masonry walls before. I've done 2 layers of 1 1/2". The first layer is installed straight up between 2x2 vertical straps and the second layer is horizontal staggered, without strapping.
SM is glued to the masonry, strapping is nailed to the masonry using regular 3 1/2" commons, nailed into pre-drilled holes with a piece of tie wire inserted.
Second layer is glue to the first and nailed to the strapping with galvanized nails and washers.
Just a thought

This gives good structural support and uses cheaper attachement.
*Teresa, On the inside or outside ?
*Mr.Martel; We think this is a solution to our question.Could you clarify several things. The attachment of the tie wire and its purpose?Your choice of adhesive, and material for strapping?Thank-you again,Teresa Greer

*Teresa,The nail and tie wire is an inexpensive alternative to tapcon screws or gripcon nails. You drill a hole through the wood strap and masonry block, the exact size of the nail to be used and insert a tie wire into it. Then you simply drive a standard common nail into the same hole. The wire will make the whole assembly tight and hold like a gripcon nail would, only much cheaper. This is how we nail the bottom plate of formwork to the footings to make sure they don't pull out.Bakor is our adhesive of choice. I don't know what is available in your area, but your local supplier will be able to better help you. You have to make sure that the adhesive is compatible with the SM insulation.Gabe
*Thanks guys for all of your wonderful help on our questions.Teresa G.
