I am bidding on 36 shelves for a new elementary school that need to be attached into block (CMU). The plans call for grommets to be used on the outside of the melamine back – apparently to keep the screws from damaging the melamine. I plan to attach these by screwing through grommets into anchors. I can’t speak with the architect and the foreman doesn’t know – they’re down to “git ‘er dun” time for them so, here’s my question: Do you think they want metal grommets for a nice looking finish and protection or a rubber grommet or ??? Any attempts to help me are much appreciated!

I wish I could answer..............
but this will keep it up top, maybe someone will take a guess.
Grommets?
on the back?
beats me.
Grommets
Acctually I think he means trim washers. You know, the kind with a rounded edge that a flat head srew goes through. Now that i think of it, I think they are more correctly called counter sink or trim washers.
I would think steel CS washers would be the look they want.
ah ha.
Thanks.
Thanks, Dave and others, I think you're probably right and I'll bid on that basis. Finish washers I've usually called them not grommets but your idea makes sense.
I would think metal.
Look for finishing washers

Unfortunately that link doesn't get you to the right page, but if you click on "finishing washers", on the right about halfway down, there are several to choose from.
FastCap makes a special screw that has a 9/16" round head on it. They also have melame "caps" that cover those heads to hide them as well.
