Attaching take-offs in existing ductwork

Greetings,
Going to start finishing off the basement. I want to tap into the forced air heating plenum to heat the basement rooms. It’s a pretty tight squeeze between the plenum top and the joists/sub-floor. How do I get a takeoff with its little tabs installed in the plenum? My guess is that I cut a section out of the bottom of the plenum, then cut the proper sized hole for the take-off, attach the take off, and then screw on a sheet metal panel on the plenum bottom.
Or is there a better way?
Thanks for your help,
Hippster

As usual, in remodeling, the answer is "depends." If you have a lot of them to put in you might want to take the plenum down to work on it. If just a couple new ones, you could use the approach you yourself suggested.
The plenum should come apart easily by sliding off the connectors.
If you cut the hole, which is a little tedious but it can be done with patience. Then you know the ears on the ellbows, 1st bend every other ear 90 degrees you insert the ell in the hole and reach in the other end of the ell and hand bend every other ear back. If you want to seal it nice use the HVAC alluminum tape in small sections around the outside top.
Cutting the hole clean does take some doing. If you use a hole cutter you'll need a rt angle drill to get in the space.
