I am remodeling a room which has the back of my fireplace.
It had been boxed in, but I found when I removed
the framing hiding it that the brick was in very good shape.
I have decided to leave it exposed, but I would also like to
continue the picture molding I am installing around the rest
of the room. My hope is that I can actually hang a picture
from this molding. This means the picture molding will need
to be securely attached in order to bear the weight. Any
suggestions as to the best way to attach this molding to
the brick or is this just a bad idea? Any better ways to
hang art work on a wall that is all brick?
Thanks,
Rich

Rich- The 1927 office bldg. I work on has mahogany picture mold throughout. Walls are plaster over hollow brick units. The old timers drilled about a 3/4" dia. hole and drove in a wooden plug to nail the picture mold to (the plug actually has a name that I forget but I'll bet Mike Smith knows what it is!). I would think that you could do about the same thing, but instead use a zinc lag shield (anchor) to attatch the mold with screws. When you drill the hole, make it smaller that called out for because brick tends to enlarge bigger than the drill diameter. - Ken
*Rich,Technicly, you're not supposed to have any flamable material in contact with the chimney. It's a little hard to say exactly what you have there, but this can be a real issue.I just did a reinspect on a house which had a house fire start inside the masonry; apparently there was a 2x4 inside the chimney mass just above the firebox opening lintel which finally ignited from pyrolosis.
