attaching unfaced FG batts in crawlspace
*
I’ve got a small (300 sqr’) insulating job to do under a kitchen of one of my apartments. Joists are 2X8, 16″ oc.
I have unfaced FG batts ready to go, but I’m looking for a good or cheap (Or hopefully both) method of keeping the FG up between the joist bays. I know they sell those metal wires that you friction fit betwen joists. How far apart are these suposed to be spaced? and has anyone just made their own out of scrap materials?
I have some scrap window screen and was considering cutting this into 6″ wide strips and stapling it under the batts to keep them in place.
Any other bright ideas out there? Or am I better off just buying some boxes of the wire thingys (technical term 🙂
Thanks.

stray... buy some boxes of the wire thingy's.. they're spring steel, so they work better...
figure 16"oc for the wires..
another thing that works is zig-zag continuous wire.. but not nearly as convenient as the wire thingy's...
BTW.. i hate F-glass in crawl spaces... but the mice love it.....
b & doan forget your vapor barrier on the dirt...
hah... knew u wouldn't anyways...the last was just for the lurkers....
*For crawl spaces I use window screen stapled as the cheapest easiest thing to do. But why not just put the insulation on the crawl space walls? Don't know where you are but if you have any plumbing in that crawl space and freezing is a consideration including the crawlspace in the conditioned space is both energy saving and protects against plumbing repairs.
*THanks guys. I thought about the mice too, but better to have warm mice and low utility bills than cold mice and high utility bills! I'll have to keep the traps set either way. There are some pipes at one end, and I planned to keep the plumbing uninsulated (open to the basement). The kitchen space was originally a side porch before someone chopped this center hall colonial into a 4 unit. The pipes are currently kept from freezing by leaving a 24"X36" Basement window open to underneath this "Porch" floor. The basement itself only gets heat lost from the steam boiler. I think some perimeter insulation foamboard is in order as well, but thats not in the budget this go-round (I already had the FG on hand from another job).I think I'll try the window screen idea since I already have some on hand (free). If that ain't cuttin' the mustard....Springy-thingies it is.
*Stray,Plastic snow fence. Really easy to handle and fasten. Easy to cut into if you need to fix something later.Steve
*stray.. there ain't nothing faster than the springy-thingy.. time is money.... and the batts suck anyways..so get 'em up...
*Straight and too the point as usual Mike. Suggestions on spacing? 12"? 18"?THanks.
*16" or whatever it says on the box...
*Well, yes, there is the fact that the FG will do nothing fer ya...Steve
*but steve... owens-corning has already sold it for us... all we gotta do is install it....what's not to like ?
*one word: callbacks;-)
