Attic and crawlspace insulation
I have a house that was built in 1924 and the insulation is practially non-existent. 2 different questions/ problems:
1) There is a crawl space under part of the house. The house has a stone foundation with no vents and there is a dirt floor and no insulation in the crawlspace. There are 2 small window-sized openings from the basement into the crawlspace and I have boards covering the openings. The house is cedar shake, so all wood construction above the basement. The living room is above the crawl space and is cold in the winter, hot and humid in the summer. I have been reading up on how to insulate this crawlspace and can’t tell what is fact vs. fiction. Does anybody have any experience/ suggestions in this kind of situation?
2) The attic has very old insulation that is pretty much worthless. Possibly rock wool? Roof is slate in case that matters. There are no vents under the eaves–just half-round vents on the north and south walls of the house. I installed a heavy duty attic fan in the south vent and it is set for about 90 degrees. The fan helps somewhat. I had air conditioning put in about 9 years ago and the air handler is installed along the exterior wall of the middle section of the attic, so I have some plywood flooring down in about 1/4 of the attic. I’d like to re-insulate the attic and put down a floor over the insulation so that I have more storage. I see that most recommend blown-in insulation but it is my understanding that you can’t put flooring over it. Is that true, and are there other ways to accomplish what I’d like to do?
