Hello, I have a good size attic space over the garage that has some partial decking. I was considering doing more decking and perhaps insulating. There is what I believe is a “strongback” on each side of the garage and a support in the center.
If I built knee walls on each side, would it provide the same support as the strongback? Also, is there a way to remove the center support without compromising the structure?
I’m thinking it might be worth getting a structural engineer so that things are done properly. I’m not sure the difficulty level of assessment so I thought I would post and get some feedback.
Attaching reference pictures from each side and one of the center support. The joists are 2×10
Any insight would be very much appreciated. Thank you!

Good idea to engage an engineer.
Also might look for a house inspector. The local building inspector might be able to offer some guidance.
Details matter, but it is possible that many of the extra supports were placed to help with the initial construction.
The adequacy of the existing rafters and joists, considering the roof decking and connections of rafters to joists to the wall will inform an analysis as to the capability of the structure to support roof and floor loads for your intended upgraded use of the space. The rafter ties may be another element that either needs to stay, be improved, or can be eliminated.
Where this is located will also need to be considered, as snow, earthquake, and storm impacts may influence the requirements.
Thank you for taking time to reply!
I'm on the Texas gulf coast.
So you are not worried about snow load, but will want to make sure it will stand up to high winds.
Yes indeed. Does it make any difference if the primary use is for storage? (We do store many things there now )
