attic insulation sugestions
looking at the best way to insulate an attic (upstate new york). i want to use it for storage it is framed w/2×6’s 16” oc and has old r11 rock wool insulation. i was planing on ripping it out installing 2” pollyiso foam board covered w/new r11 fiberglass and plywood over it , or should i hire a foam contractor and do the underside of the roof rafters(hip roof 2×6” 16”oc) and leave the rock wool alone? would foaming the rafters cause the roofing to get to hot and shorten the life of the asphalt shingles? i also plan on adding an 1or 2 attic fans to keep the space cooler ……………thanks for any advice

If you do a search here on any one of your ideas, you'll find a bunch of discussions on each.
Personally, I'd build a raised platform in the attic for your storage needs. I'd also build a raised "catwalk" down the middle for access around the attic (future running of wires etc and also for inspection). Then I'd blow an additional 12 inches or more of cellulose on top of your present insulation, and under the platforms.
I did jsut what was suggested above - I built a raised platform with 2x6, and a catwalk down the center of the attic. The 2x6, plus the 2x4 rafters gives 9 inches for insulation. I think this, plus plywood for the deck, plus all the boxes sitting on top of platform gives adequate insualtion.
We have cellulose, so the edges of the deck and catwalk have 12 inch OSB sides to keep it out.
