Outside of the fact that framing can possibly make noises at night due to changing temperitures in the early morning (1-5 am), what else can make loud popping, cracking sounds in the attic? The house is production, 9 months old, single story, stucco exterior. So. Cal area. GW

Do not try this at home!

Was green or wet lumber used? could your house be settling? Is your attic properly vented? Built on an old graveyard?

I live in Boulder, CO. 40 year old house, stick framed, brick veneer and a little bit of vertical redwood siding. The house pops and snaps as it cools off at night. Happens all year round. I assume it pops and snaps as it warms up in the morning, but there are enough other sounds during the day that I don't notice it.
I've never tried to count the noises, but from memory I would say probably not more than 3 or 4 an hour. Maybe twice that. No increase or decrease in the count in the 14 years I've lived here.
Sometimes I lie in bed and think about scattering a bunch of microphones around the house, hooked up to a computer with some DSP software, to localize the pops and find out if it's even possible to fix them. Fascinating science project, but they're not keeping me awake. If I'm awake long enough to hear more than a couple of them, it's because my legs hurt, and I get up and take some drugs.
