Ok, not exactlky rafters, but I still need cheap advice. HO want to finish out a very large attic … headroom about 20 ft at the ridge. Here’s a couple of pics with the issue … can I demo what appears to be temporary construction bracing that was left in place?
In both pics, there is a shorter “wall” in the background with a double top plate, and I assume that has a structural purpose. In the foreground are studs from floor to rafters that are just nailed to the sides of the rsafters. They are on every other rafter.
Sorry for the darknerss … it’s a very large area and my flash was almost strong enough.
I’m sorry, I thought you wanted it done the right way.

The back double plated wall is bearing, since the rafters split over it....for the rest, it's hard to tell...but I'd check all the spans, load paths, etc. & unless you are sure you know whats what consult an engineer....
You know better than that Ed. What do those srongbacks bear on? Is there a structural ridge? Have you lost your mind?
I don't see anything I would tear out without a structural analysis from a PE
Odds are good you have the space to be able to replace some things to end up making the goal, but not willy nilly removing what is there for a reason.

C'mon Pif, cut me some slack. To me, a strongback is nailed directly to the rafter etc that it is supposed to be strengthening ... these boards are several fgeet away from the rafters. Also, you can't see it, but the vertical boartds are nailed to the rafters with one nail each.
Anyway, it's a moot point now. Pulled back the insulation on the floor (first floor ceiling) and the potential floor joists are only 2x6. Several other issues as well. I advised the HO to have an archy do some research.

Ed, I should have added the little smiley, but yes, there was a tremendous lot there that I couldn't see. That is the point I was giving you grief over. How you would expect a decent opinion based on what showed there....?

Yeah, as I was formulating the original post, I suspected that I was gonna catch some flak ... it was a classic "truss-cutting" type question.
