I want to install attic stairs in my home and am looking for instructions on how to frame the opening. The ladder in my hall will be run north-south, but my ceiling joists run east-west. Does anyone know where I can find a diagram that will show me how to frame the opening? Thanks very much.

Here's the first one I found asking Framing for pull down attic stairs.
And the first link provided might answer your questions from Tom Silva-this old house.

Note that if you have trusses and not just regular ceiling joists you need to be a lot more careful with the modifications.
