Audel’s books- anyone use them?

mathewson | Posted in General Discussion on September 14, 2008 09:05am

I’ve carried a set of the little Audel’s 1939 books in my truck for years and have found them to be very usefull for odd problems which pop up from time to time. I’ve never run across anyone else who has them, yesterday the Vertias catalog arrived & in it they are selling a re-print of the books. Maybe more people use them then I thought, anyone else use them?

Santa brought me a set of the Lee Valley reprint edition for Christmas last year. Fascinating stuff and a wealth of information not easily found elsewhere.

If you've got a set of the originals in decent condition, they're probably worth a good bit more than they sold for when they were published....

On the inside cover of each is the orginal sticker. $1.50 each from M. Oneil Co. They are in good condition after all these years.

The ad I posted was scanned off the back cover of the December 1949 issue of Astounding Science Fiction. I think you said your Audel's books were from the 30s? Interesting to see how the price stayed steady all those years. Try that today, LOL....

    Very interesting.

I found them on the Lee Valley site
    http://www.leevalley.com/wood/page.aspx?c=1&p=54923&cat=1,46096,46100&ap=1

Can you tell me a bit more about them?
Not knowing much about framing, I'd be particularly keen on picking up the set if it's a practical guide.

    Thanks,
    Steve

Steve--Go for it. You won't regret it for a second. These books are one of those 'lifetime library' items.

There's a lot of info about framing, since I'm not a framer I don't know how usefull it is but I would think it would be. What I use them for is any curved or unusual problem I run across the answer can generally be found in one of them. I also use a lot of hand tools on a day to day basis & it is interesting to to see them described in the books. How many people use a Taylor Miter Clamp or a Wood screw planing miter box (donkey's ear) these days.

Thanks for the info. I'll give them a try. Sounds like it might be just what I'm looking for.And if you are looking for some hardback editions, there's a recent post on Craigslist Seattle for vols. 1,3 & 4. I do, but mine are 1970 edition 4 volume carpenters builders library and I liked my fathers original soft covered from his high school years (1936 or so) which my brother uses. I have a lot of other "carpentry" books but these 4 cover a lot of ground in a small space.

I used them a lot when I first started, but haven't thought of them for a long time. They must be around here someplace....

    I bought many from bookstores.

I like the steel square parts and hip roof parts and cool old pics

I have some, can't tell you which as they are packed away.

Ebay or Half.com can probably fill your library, maybe Amazon too.

I've got a mint set of the 1951 edition shown in the ad Dinosaur posted.
I use them on occasion, but they don't leave my desk.
