Playing with this today at home. Great Aunt’s old French fountain. Pouring a 93″ OD X 77″ ID X 5-11″ deep level ring; liner sheet goes inside that on a sand bed; fountain on riser so its base is just at the water line. Liner laps over the 8″ wide top of the concrete ring; dry-laid old brick from Great-Great uncle’s brick factory in Asheville laid around the concrete ring to anchor the liner sheet.
Fountain – partially disassembled – needs re-plumbing – it has HAND CUT screws!
Yes, it’s laser flat! 3/16″ Masonite wraps the ID down to the dirt, then the inner form goes in
Forrest – sweaty – she would have to have it in an old driveway bed . . .

Yeah; I just blew the power valve on a Holley (4165) after a fun run up thru the gears and a big backfire on letting off.
Had all the parts but one bowl gasket. First time that happened to me - just dumped in tons of fuel at idle and chugged like crazy; cleaned up fine once I really got on it and the high-speed circuit was supposed to work.
Diagnosis was the hard part - finally learned from some of my buddies over at the Cadillac hot rod site to close both idle screws; if it still idles (sorta'), it's getting fuel from somewhere!

Did that fence always go with the fountain? The fence looks like it grew there and they look about the same vintage.

Not sure where the fence came from, but it was always around it in my memory. Fence is mild steel, though, so not too old.

Great! I'll tell the kids. I'm trying now to decide how to make adjustable spray nozzles so I can fine tune the effect "after the fact". I think I can braze fittings into 3/8" pipe nipples that will take Holley carburetor jets - they're brass!

Wow again. Man that is awesome! Nice work. Great to restore something that old to working condition! My brain + his brawn = a perfect team
Probably putting WAY too much thought into this! But, it's ours, and who's in a hurry?
I wanted the fountain to be as tall as possible, so I made this base that sits 1" under the surface, and is about 3/4" larger in diameter than the base of the fountain. The pump will fit inside this sub-base, and the (6) holes match the (6) arches in the base of the fountain. This gives the fish a place to hide, I think.
Base is made from a hot-dipped #3 washtub, and an old stop sign trimmed and bolted to it. Holes are done with 4-1/2" hole saw, and hammer & dolly work to roll the edges in. Cold-galvanized spray on the cut edges, then primer and black. Did you know EVERY paint and primer says "not for use over galvanized?"View Image
Wanted a a level base under the pond liner sheet, one that woudn't pinch it under the edge of the tub. Made this form that's 13" below the level of the pond rim. I'll put sand over the rest of the clay, it's full of sharp gravel. Then the liner sheet back over it all.View Image

Forrest,Great work as usual. The fence and those "Family" brick are a nice touch,Aunt Fannie's Fountain looks like it grew there.Chuck Slive, work, build, ...better with wood
Just one more. Got the lions' too-vigorous spouts tuned this evening. The nozzles are 2" lengths of 1/4" copper tubing. Squeezing the exits down made them spew straight into the water - not relaxing!
So - I took the lions heads, unscrewed each compression fitting on the 1/4" copper nozzles, and filled the BACK end (near the manifold) with a Bondo plug. Then, drilled a .060 hole when it kicked off. That way, there is a restriction, but it bounces around enough in the short bit of tubing to slow the velocity down. Also gave me a bit more spray height on the top.
View Image
Forrest - I'm finished now; she just has to plant those Hostas and get some fish. Oh - and a trench for the wire.

Great frozen fountain pics. Reminds me of a cold winter day in Potsdam when a flock of ducks tried to land in the big fountain in front of the Sanssouci Palace. Such a fluttering of wings and flailing of webbed feet I'd never seen before as the whole lot of them skidded across the iced-over water.

Pretty "Cool", pun intended. You might want to bump the year up to '08 on camera so the time stamps are accurate, never know when you might need to rely on it for something critical.

Better to just turn the date stamp off. More annoying than anything. You can always look at the file date to see when the pic was taken.

I agree, but the date stamp on the file comes from the date setting on the camera, right? If the camera is off it will the wrong date on the pic and on the file.
I need to experiment before I can answer that one. I would suspect that if the date wasn't set on the camera, that the file date would be the date that the pictures were uploaded off the camera, but I don't know that for sure.
If the date IS set on the camera, the file date tends to be the date the pic was taken.
If you use Windows Explorer, there are multiple date columns you can turn on. "Date Modified" is usually a default one, but "Date Picture Taken" is another. On those shots where my camera lost its date (and reverted to the default 01/01/2002..or whatever), the "Date Picture Taken" field is blank.jt8

ooooooh, how about putting solar collector panels on the roof of the kiln shed and have that HEAT the fountain water? You could probably find the plans on the Mother Earth News website and do it for less than $10!
But then again, that would probably be a waste of $$ with only 3 days of the year below freezing down there.
