AUTO FEED SCREW GUNS WITH STAND-UP AT…

| Posted in General Discussion on September 29, 1999 07:11am

I’vve used the Quikdrive QD2000 for the past few years for subfloors and decking. While the auto-feed is great, I have found that using the extension on the handle will greatly reduce the speed and accuracy of the gun. It still tears up my back, but it sure is faster than conventional screw guns.

I've used the Stanley Bostich (quickdrive system for several years. The extension works OK, you just have to get into the rhythm of the work. It's as precise as the chalk lines can make it for sheet goods, but I use it as a hand gun for decks - the auto feed just makes it faster than a screwgun and i'm usually bending over anyway.

Stanley/Bostitch only makes the actual gun. The Quick Drive attachment at the end is made by Quick Drive Corporation. They also make many adapters to turn your drywall gun into a Quick Drive system. You just have to buy the Quick Drive attachement, the Extension (if you want), and the appropriate adapter.

I own both the Stanley/Quick Drive SGA-3 kit, and the SGA-2 kit. The SGA-3 drives 2" to 3" #8 screws, and the SGA-2 drives 1 1/4" to 2" screws. I also have the extension. I wouldn't trade either one for the world. I use the 3" gun to attach deck boards, framing, subflooring, etc... I use the 2" gun to attach drywall, underlayment, sheathing, etc...

I don't know how pricing is around the country, but I did some serious shopping and got my 3" gun for $300.00, and the 2" gun for $400.00. The screws are a different story.
My local Stanley/Bostitch supplier wants $74.00 a box for the 3" galvanized decking screws. I now order them from Home Depot for $36.00 They take about a week to get, but they are Stanley/Bostitch screws. I figured I would save some cash and order them once in a while.

I went to a trade show last year and saw the Quick Drive attachment at work on a Porter Cable screw gun. The setup was about $250.00 for the Quick Drive attachment and adapter, and about $200.00 for the Porter Cable screw gun. If I hadn't already had mine, I would have bought it for sure.

*Dito on the QD2000. I love it. I use the strip feed. The cost of the barrel was just too much. I use it mostly for decks. If a chalk line is not enough to keep you straight use a 1x4. The kit I bought had a dewalt decking gun, the 3' extension, I bought the 3" adaptor with it. All together it was about 300$.Rick Tuk

The new Milwaukee is A fine unit! After using it once, my quick drive is on the back shelf.

I'm giving in to my back and will buy a screw gun w/auto feed and a stand up attachment. I've tested PAM, QuikDrive and Stanley. Anybody got suggestions?
