I’m in the process of restoring an 1880-era home in Atlantic Canada. The traditional style of these homes include open joist bays for the first floor ceilings. So, in order to keep the plumbing stack in the wall cavity for the second floor toilet and not see pipes in the living room ceiling, we’re going to need a back-flush toilet. Do you have any recommendations regarding brands? Also, it would be nice if the toilet looked somewhat traditional and not twenty-first century in design. Finally, is there another name for these types of toilets? I’m finding very little information on the internet when I type in “back-flush toilets”. Thank you for any help you can provide.

Do you mean rear discharge? Like wall hungs, that discharge horizontally into a pipe in the wall? I think, tho am not sure, that there are a few floor mounted looking, but rear discharge toilets. There are more tradional rear discharge with tanks, wall hung.

Most European and Asian toilets are installed with a rear discharge. In these days of web shopping it should be pretty easy to find one.
