Back up your computer

FastEddie | Posted in General Discussion on July 8, 2007 12:14pm

I posted previously about problems with my hard drive, and I took it to the local Geek Squad for analysis.  For $59 they sent it to Louisville for deeper inspection.  I’m thinking part of the problem now is that they sent it too close to Sphere.  The tech called this morning and said hard drive problems are rated as class 1, 2 or 3, and mine is a class 3.  I suspect that most of them are diagnosed that way.  For an additional $100 they will send it into surgery in a clean room and see what can be done.  If they find that the data can recovered 80% they will copy it all to cd’s and bill me $1,600.  If they can’t get 80% then they send it back no further charge.

That backup progrsm sure is looking like cheap insurasnce now.

Sounds bad Ed, I hate it for ya.

I try to not have anything THAT important depend on a Computer..just old habits die hard. What sucked was when some MoFo broke into my van and stole my photo portfolio...and a lot of the negs were lost in a fire 12 yrs ago. I widh I had scanned and saved them.

    Best of luck.

    Wow, $1600 that's a bummer.

I've got most of our digital pics burned to CD's.  Back my business stuff up to a zip drive every week or so.  That's about the only important stuff on my computer.

The Geek Squad sent my laptop to Louisville last January to fix the cooling fan and a problem with the display.  Finally got it back a month later, with a dead battery and no power cord.   They never did fix the display problem.   The cord took another two weeks to get.   The fan stopped working again a couple weeks ago.  It's out of warranty now, gonna see if a local computer guy can fix it this time.

All major disk manufacturers have had bad runs of drives. This is one reason why you do backups.

I've had Maxtor, Seagate, and Western Digital drives all fail at one time or another, and have heard of similar experience from others. A mfgr will go along for 5 years or so with minimal problems, then a particular drive line will start causing trouble, with a whole flock of problems in the space of a year or two. Then they get the problem under control and it's some other mfgr's turn.

(This does kinda suggest that if you have a backup drive, it's better that it be a different brand from your main drive.)

            >I havent had a problem with mine yet. <

It's just a matter of time.  it doens't take much to do, either an external HD (even addl internal) or CDs or DVDs (better than CDs in capacity).

I lost a drive with pictures on it and DWs letter to our at the time unborn daughter written during her pregnancy.  Data Recovery places (2 top notch ones) couldn't make it work so it sits in the safe waiting for technology to (hopefully) catch up with the problem.

            ron,

lacie makes the most beautiful (as in pretty) external hard drives I have ever seen.

they even patterned some after legos.

            way cool.

unfortunately, lacie's external drives are generally regarded as junk.

take a look at the reviews on amazon.

back them up with something else.

Five?Wow!I've never had one go south, just lucky I guess. All three desktops I've owned have been Dells. One laptop was an eMachine (freebie), one a Sony Vaio (freebie), one a Dell (paid for).My first Dell desktop I converted into an arcade game. Built a standard arcade-sized and shaped cabinet, converted the keyboard to joysticks and buttons, and loaded it with old-style mame-based arcade games... Ms Pacman, Asteriods, etc.The other two desktops are still in use. The Maxtor and Western Digital external drives seem to be pretty decent. Let's hope my luck continues.Mongo

$1,600??????!!!!! My entire computer cost about $1K, and lots of people told me I spent too much. Methinks I will order one of those USB backup drives. Tonight!

I've been using Carbonite for backup for about 8 months now. It backs up to a server somewhere, I have no idea where. It runs in the background on my machine, and sends any file that is added or changed, monitoring and uploading on an ongoing basis (usually starts uploading within an hour or two of any changes, depending on how much the internet connection is doing). I make occasional CDs of my stuff too.

About 6 monts ago I had a 30gig onboard fail. Geek Squad couldn't fix it & wanted to send it off; forcast high cost.

I took it to local computor repair shop who disassembled it, put the disks in another case and recovered all the data files. We didn't even try software; why bother just re load it. Cost about $300

This points out why to keep all data files in seperate direcory from program files.

Remember, Hard Drives have a 100% failure rate.

Also, remember that the Geek Squad is overpriced and undertrained. You can always find better, cheaper tech support help at a local computer place.
