Will be attempting bathroom remodel; new tub, fixtures and tiling. Researched a couple of Taunton Press books on tiling. Some guys use a water proof backing attached to studs before cement board installation and some don’t. What’s the general consensus on this? What type, if it should be used? 4 mil plastic, 15 lb. roofing felt?

All depends on what kind of backer board you use.
Me, I liked the product clled WEDI, it's a rigid foam sheet with cement and mesh on both faces. It's light, easy to work, and best of all WATERPROOF AT THE SURFACE. It doesn't depend on a waterproof backing. Kerdi makes a similar product.
backing for cement board
Thanks for the input. Was thinking about using Wonder board or Durock cement board, or whatever is available at the big box stores. Will research the WEDI.
I always use Kerdi membrane on my shower/tub installs now. Makes it completely waterproof! If you use Kerdi you dont need to put anything under the cement board. If you dont , I would staple tar paper to the studs. Good Luck!

use either 4 mil poly or tar paper just make sure the lower edge laps OVER the tub lip!
Quick, easy, always in the truck.
Good luck
And you were looking for a consensus? Here??
