In several of the homes I have built I have had complaints about the hinges on the interior doors. They are making a very fine black dust. oiling dose not provide a long term fix.
Is there any thing i can do to fix this with out replacing all of the hinges?

There are no bad door hinges, they're just misunderstood.
I suspect poor quality alloys, or doors that are too heavy for the hinges.

Where were the hinges made? Perhaps China? Metalurgy QC there in some cases isn't what it should be.

Actually, lubing with a teflon-bearing lube (eg, Triflo) will probably provide a longer-term fix than oil. But nothing will really solve the problem other than replacing them.

simple, so simple..got a torch? Heat (LOW) and rub a bees wax candle or some o' the best of David Douds cake wax..all done.
Or, get brass.

Mick,
I have had the same problem in my own house. It seems to be worse on the bathroom doors so the moisture must have something to do with it. I have replaced several hinges with "good" brass ones and they seem to solve the problem so I am also going with a material problem.

You clearly aren't married to my wife. Some things she just doesn't want to share.
Just returned from tidewater. My mother's 93rd b'day. We don't miss them at this stage. Life's OK up here, come on up. Isa called last week looking for more help. I didn't volunteer, but sent her a couple of guys (neither carps).
But where's the sun? We didn't move to Seattle exactly because of this kind of weather. Still have copper to get on a roof.PAHS Designer/Builder- Bury it!
