Rob. In my book, Complete Building Construction, I quoted an article from the February 1988 issue of Progressive Architecture, which said that balloon framing was invented in 1832 by George Washington Snow. I had other material that said Snow was ässistedïn his invention by others. But I could not locate the material.
In 1998 ? Automayted builder Magazine published an article claiming that an Augustine Taylor invented balloon framing. I just looked through several piles of magazines but could not locate the magazine. GeneL.

*I was reading The Visual Dictionary of American Domestic Architecture by Rachel Carley this morning, and it said that Balloon framing was invented in Chicago in 1830's. Was George Washington Snow from Chicago?I also posted a question this morning as to web sites relating to architectural history stuff. Do you guys know of any?Dan Morrison
*Dan. It is my understanding that snow was from Connecticut. I may be wrong about this. GeneL.

In my research, it was Snow. Chicago. 1830s. But
I'm researching the history of plank houses. Know
anything about them?

I'm still a neophyte at architectural history. What do you mean by plank houses? I've seen some stuff about houses with vertical planks in a board and batten type pattern sunk in mud built in the deep south, 1700's-1830's? French colonial?
Since we've been talking about George Snow, I've also seen his name mentioned as an important San Fransisco architect. I guess the guy really got around.
Dan
*Dan. My understanding is that George Washington snow was a carpenter from connecticut. In my book, _Complete_Building_Construction_ 4th Edition I quote from the February 1988 issue of the now defunct _Progressive_ Architecture_ that Snow invented balloon framing. However, according to a long article in a 1997 or 1998 issue of _Automated_Builder_ Augustine Taylor is the inventor of balloon framing.GeneL.
*Huh.

If any of you guys have access to "American Heritage of Invention and Technology" magazine (Spring 1999) there is a neat article on balloon framing and it's origins. The article states the technique is essentially a hybrid that originates with the French immigrants in Mississippi in the early - 1800's!!
If you don't get the magazine, you may ahve trouble finding it, most newsstands don't carry it.
