A while back there was a discussion about barns and proportions. I said I’d get some pics of the barn where I grew up, and finally got that done yesterday.
The barn is 60 X 80 – Pretty big for this area. The sidewalls are at 12′ or so, and the roof is roughly 8/12. So it’s about 32′ tall at the ridge.
In the SW view you see a bright red area. Dad has been working on replacing boards in that area, as the bottom ends of the boards had rotted off. More of the boards need fixed, then I think he’s finally going to have it painted.
The interior view shows some of the beam work that went into it. Pretty impressive, considering it was build in 1908. (We think)
Lotsa memories tied up in that old barn.

Boss, here is a site that you might find interesting......
http://www.ohiobarns.com/
Excellent site- Thanks Pi, I have collected lots of barn pictures on 35mm in hopes to Paint them one day when I'm too old to swing a hammer. This is a great site and it shows some excellent out of the envelope construction.
Thanks again"Rather be a hammer than a nail"

You're welcome.......As this is Ohio's Bicentennial, these barns were painted in all 88 counties in the state.....A friend of mine made it a point to visit each and every one and take a photo of it!!
I even was surprised at the many and varied barns in my home state!!
Pi-
You do just so Rock!
Well, you just made my day!!
Is it as cold in your part of the state as it is here in Cleveburg?
cleveburg's just a hop west away and the same.
Speaking of barns...
I think it was two winter's back that I wished I'd snapped some pics for here on BT.
Lady that sells insurance had this humongus new barn built on her property. Apparently it wasn't quite finished when winter hit and loaded the roof with snow.
It was quite a site to see the pile of debris sitting there as someone hadn't placed collars or something was missing there, and the walls fell in and the roof came tumbling down.
Maybe she was trying to be an example as to why folks need insurance, I don't know.
7 degrees this morning!!
I grew up in southern Ohio(Athens County) and loved the back roads and the old, old barns......
Hey, just because someone has money, doesn't mean they have good sense....<G>
-6 around 3am! creakin' timbers on more than the old barn!
Most Amish homes around here usually have a stack of old barn beams sitting somewhere on their property.
Hey, I'm not amish and I wouldn't mind having a pile to pick from.
There was ####PBS documentary about Barns a few years back that is worth searching out. You might be able to buy it or have your library get it for you.
Now I know what you are saying, a doc about barns, now there's excitement. I thought the same thing and being in the TV business I was expecting a real bore.
All I can say is that program was one of the most beautifully shot docs I have ever seen. Very informtive and historical as well. Worth the effort searching thios one out. Especially for a city biy (like me) and kids looking to understand the rich heritage of our agricultural roots.
Used to live out in NE Indiana, and traveled in NW Ohio. Near where we lived was an excellently preserved round barn that dated to about 1870, and over in nearby Ohio I once in a while drove by a 16-sided one with a matching cupola. German immigrants probably did them.
Lotsa memories tied up in that old barn.
any fit for Breaktime??
Any memories fit for Breaktime ???
Well, I hate to disappoint ya, but I never got any nookie or did anything perverse in there.
The memories are stuff like putting up endless amounts of hay and straw, Taking care of animals in there since I was a small kid, pulling a truck engine by throwing a log chain over a beam 20' up, building forts in the straw in the loft, making swings that hung from the beams in the loft, my Sister falling out of the loft and landing on a pig, shovelling load after load of ear corn into the corn crib, etc.
How long do you want me to go in ???My parents were overprotective. Even our cotton balls had a childproof cap.
