barrel vault

| Posted in Construction Techniques on July 30, 2002 05:49am

Is  there anyone out there that has built a  barrel vault ?  The project calls for a vault 14′ x10′ added to foyer of a hip roof structure. My first  ideal ws to make ribs out of 3/4 plywood with 2x sandwiched in the middle. About 7 ft  into the length of  the vault it intersects the existing 8/12 roof.  One end has the new door with windows above and the other end is open to the second floor with a rail  There is 17 ft of open space (floor to ceiling).  Since it is open space  I have ruled out trusses.

Roll out the barrel ! Help

 Thanks OT

Help me clarify this is my own mind first by confirming or explaining away my assumptions,

The barrel vault is a cieling only and not a barrel roof.

But it may be somewhat structural since the roof rafters of the main hip roof land on it so the open barrel can continue on into the space?????

And you have no help from the architech?

    Excellence is its own reward!

"Since it is open space I have ruled out trusses."

That's sick - Don't you know that trusses are the answer to all your problems ???

O.K., seriously - Trusses may or may not help, depending on how the roof is framed. I've done scissor trusses in this case, at the request of the framer. They can give you something to work from if nothing else. But if there isn't much depth to work with, it may not pan out.

Actually, I've done 'round" trusses a couple of times. they were built with segments of 2X12 so they could be cut to a specific radius after fabrication. You biggest obstacle to doing this is finding a truss company that's willing to work with you on this idea.

Even though Piffin is a moron, he brings up some good questions. A bit more description about what you're doing would be helpful. Maybe even a sketch or picture ???

    (BTW - Just kidding, Piffin)

A cynic smells the flowers and then looks for the casket.

I know that, but ot might not. You could cornfuse him more than he cornfused me, then we'd have to straighten it all out most worshipful truss engineer.

This does sound like a hard challenge without lots of details or a drawing.Excellence is its own reward!

        ".......most worshipful truss engineer."

Hey, now - let's not get into name calling.

Actually, I know a guy from down south that refers to himself as the "Great white truss god".

Guess we'll have to wait and see if "ot" turns up again, so we don't end up just talking to ourselves.......

A penny saved is a Congressional oversight.

thanks for your  input....here is my plan.... head off the rafters and make the roof opening as you would a dormer opening  with double or tripled rafters to carry the load to the plate.... make the "barrel " area out of 3/4 plywood "ribs' scribed and cut with a jigsaw  or sawsall... sandwich them together with 2x between..tie the ribs together with  2x4s horizontally notched into the ribs on 24" centers...use bending plywood for the exterior and interior roof areas .. the roof gets copper standing  seam material......included are 2 jpeg  attachments with elevations of the project.. I'm tryng to figure out how to build  it and how much to  charge them for this and  how much money will go into the off shore bank when I'm bill them.. then I'll roll out the Barrel and have a few cold ones..

Why don't you try Easy-Arch.  they sell preformed metal arches in many sizes.  You line them up and you'd have a clean barrel vault. you can find them at http://www.easy-arch.com

What kind of surface will this ceiling have?  Concave surfaces like that can get you into some really wierd acoustics, particularly if they're hard.

      Ooooo!!!

That must've been a pleasant challenge to work on. Good Palladian feel!

      Step aside for the MAN!

      I looked at

      http://www.easy-arch.com/Applications.htm

and couldn't find that easy arch does any thing big enough but they look like some great product to use for door opennings and smaller arches.

I don't know if may experience will translate to your situation but, I did a really big one. It was about a 28 foot span with a large radius (I forget exactly how large, but the way we dealt with the whole thing was to run the rafters the other direction. We bought big glulam curved "rim" arches for either end of the barrel, and spanned the rafters (TJI's) between them. Then we strapped the rafters top and bottom with 1x4's in the other direction for fastening roofing and ceiling materials to. This too had a standing seam copper roof with the seams ruinning in the curved direction. The roofer loved that, but it looks great.

I posted about this before.......I mostly stood around and told my buddy, Joe.....encouraging words like...that ain't gonna happen!

And...this'll never work......useing the ply ribs make it not so hard at all. Hardest part was coming up with the original plan of attack. Just picturing the thing....

All we had to go with was the size of the window and the limits of the roof framing...which was limited by the 2nd floor windows! All done on the fly. 3 sided hip off the building...with the 4th side of the hip faked in so the ceiling would peak. Was fun...nice weather that week too!

One thing I miss about working for that company......always something fun like that around the corner! Jeff   She's exotic ,but not foreign, like an old Cadillac......she's a knockout!
