My fireplace surround is done in backerboard, and the taping sits kind of high on the board. I am going to do venetian plaster over this. What is the best base to mud this up with? Drywall mud will go quickly and can be skimmed with the plaster. Any other products or choices?

No worries. Found out the plaster guys want a basic drywall finish base "grade 5" smooth so no bumps and lumps telescope through. Thanks for the help! Those who can make you believe in absurdities can make you commit atrocities- Voltaire
Finish like a regular rock wall totally smooth. #5 finish if you can.
