   How wide is the ductwork you're trying to cover?  Important as to span of drywall.

   I have taken 1-5/8's metal stud track and screwed the proper length drops (studs) to reach the bottom of the duct plus an inch and a half.  Hang that next to the ductwork, not worrying about level just yet.  Start somewhere and fasten "L" metal to those studs bottoms, leveling that "L" metal as you go.  Keep the bottom of the "L" metal about 2'' from the lowest point of the duct.   Do the other side of the duct the same way.  Connect the two with more 1-5/8's stud under the duct leaving a bit of clearance.  This for ductwork maybe over 24'' wide.  You can omit the bottom flat studs and ''L'' metal (use track on the bottom) if under 24'' wide.

   or

   hang plywood down from the joists or a nailer and connect the two with more ply across the bottom.  Cover with sheetrock.

   A great place for Information, Comraderie, and a sucker punch.

   Calvins got it covered......

   I have never worked with metal studs, and have always just used 2x2's but with the same idea.

   custom.  The metal is nice because you build half a ladder, hang it with no real concern except straight.  Then you fine tune the bottom track or "L" metal.  Easy to up/down/around obstructions.

   I was taught metal in malls, warehouses and factories.  Seemed second nature to take them to the basement.A great place for Information, Comraderie, and a sucker punch.
