I am currently doing a remodel job that included cutting windows and a door into a basement wall for egress below grade. The home owner would like to have the rest of the basement windows, which have had the origional awning windows removed from steel bucks removed and aluminium slider storm windows indtalled, replaced with a good double glazed window that could be fastned into the existing steel buck. My local lumber yard, which is normally very good at supplying what I need has not been able to come up with anything which is very satisfactory for the job.
If anyone has done this, and has suggestions as to where to get good windows, to fit into existing steel basement window bucks, I would apprecialt any help.

If you're not committed to wood, you could get custom-sized vinyl basement hopper windows. They cost about $75 each. They are well insulated and easy to install, but you loose clear galss area and are, well, vinyl.
A regional millwork wholesaler here in the Northeast (Brosco) sells wood basement window sash. With luck you might find one in your area that is close enough to be trimmed to fit your opening. Maybe you could find a millwork dealer who sells a similar item. These are not double-paned as I recall, but they are so small, heat loss should be minimal.
