We are planning a two story addition – about 23 x 22 to an old (1860s) farmhouse. The existing house has a combination of old wood shiplap siding, and newer 4 inch aluminum siding. We are strapped for funds for the addition, but we would really prefer wood for the addition siding since we are also planning a large deck and future front poarch. I’m having trouble finding a reliable way to gauge the relative cost for aluminum, vinyl and wood, and what about fabricated materials like Hardie board? Can any of you share some useful rules of thumb or ball park prices to comare different siding choices?
Thanks in advance, DS

Dave,
As soon as I get the siding stage of our house I will be using clear hemlock clapboard, 3 -16 foot lenghts. Primed and first coated on both sides for $ 1.00 per lineal foot. They use Cabot's product " The Finish" which is a paint for the first coat and if you second coat with it you get a 15 year product warranty from Cabot. The clapboard is 6 inch with a 4.5 inch exposure. If you're interested go to woodsiding.com which will take you to the Granville Bowl Mill in Granville VT. Jeff Fuller is the owner and contact person.
Good Luck

For something durable try Hardie Plank.
Lots beetter than wood (a four letter word)
You need to be more specific about your size and budget. Siding can run from .80 to eith dollars/foot, installed. and that doesn't include paint.
Excellence is its own reward!
lets see mmmm how about seamless steel siding or T1 - 11
