Can anyone tell me about how much it would cost to have a bath tub refinished by a professional? Also, how effective is the process? I have heard of some finishes flaking off, but some contractors offer a 5 year warranty.

5 years is about right.
Mine (paint) was done almost 6 years ago, and I have babied it, but now do have some small chips and the finish is getting dull. I never use any abrasive, only "Clean Shower" and a soft sponge.
Gonna have it re-done in about a year.
It would sure be nice if it was possible to have real porcelain put on, since it lasts for decades, but that takes many hundred degrees to bake it on.
I have heard about epoxy, but it does not sound much better than the 2-part paint that was used on mine.

Norm,
Thanks for the reply. Can you give me an idea how much it costs to have someone acid etch and refinish a tub?
Thanks,
Chris
Expect to pay between $250 and $800 with a 2-5 year warranty.
This is not subjective. Ask what the refinisher will do for the fee. If the surface is merely thin but in tact, expect a lower fee ($250). If the surface is partially cracked, expect a medium fee (500) because they will have to re-surface the area. If the surface is completely shot, and needs to be taken down to bare metal, re-bonded, then surfaced and sealed, expect to pay $800, and the total process will take about 6-8 hours.
Expect a quality re-surfacing to last about 5-7 years. We just got about 10 years out of ours, but hastened the demise of the tub with a rubber suction mat which nicely took up the epoxy in chunks every time it was unsuctioned and removed. They can last up to 15-20 years if properly cared for (read: not used much).
