Bath remodel – wasted space question
I’m looking at remodeling a bathroom for a client, and he would like to use some wasted space. Here is a description of it:
The back of the bathtub is against the stairwell. The stairwell is next to the outside wall. At the end opposite of the faucet, there is a void approximately 3 feet or so deep. At the rim of the tub, it is probably 3 to 4 feet wide, and angled to match the angle of the stairs.
The homeowner wants a new bathtub and tiled walls. Do any of you have suggestions as to how I can best utilize that area?
I have thought about making a recessed area only, just deep enough for shelves to hold soap and shampoo, etc. Could it be deeper? I know it would have to be waterproofed. I might use the Schluter product, or Wedi to waterproof it.
Thanks!
Bryan

I lost as to the configuration.
If at the end of the tub, open it up partially to the room and provide towell enclosure. Don't go full depth of tub with this so you can still give them recessed shelves for shampoo etc.
Have a happy thanksgiving down there.

I'll try to clarify.
The space is at the back of the tub, not at the end. So, behind the tub there is dead space. If you were facing the front of the tub, the faucet is to your right, the end of the tub is on your left, and the space is behind the tub on the left hand end.
Hope that helps.

Could that space be used and accessed from a room on the other side of the bathroom?
Jeffrey,
That would have been my first thought too.
Unfortunately, they are both outside walls, and it's not practical to make access from the stairway.

is it possible to move the tub and buiild in some drawers? or even just turn the tub for access to the space?

I tried to talk him into using the existing space as well as the bathroom next to it and make a nice master bath. But he said no.
The bathroom is a fairly small footprint. Just enough room for a tub, toilet, and a 36" wide vanity. He does want to extend the room two feet into the bedroom so that a five foot vanity with a double sink can be put in.
There just is not enough room staying within the existing footprint to move anything around.
Thanks for the suggestion.
