We moved into a new built in December 2021. We were instructed to seal the grout in the bathroom ourselves, which we did. We applied two coats. I am very comfortable that the sealer was applied successfully and is not an issue.
I recently noticed that right below the showerhead, some of the grout has changed color somehow and is darker. It has not been drying either. I am keeping an eye on it to notice whether it increases or decreases.
During a shower, before, or after, no water ever directly falls on that area of the darker grout either, so I know for sure that it’s not coming from outside.
Any ideas what could be causing this? Post shower, using a drywall humidity meter read around 6 which falls under normal (at least that’s my understanding).
If there is an actual issue, I want to go to the builder with solid backing and information. Otherwise, I know they have been brushing off things as normal.
Thank you in advance!!

I just don't see anything in that photo on the grout. I think I see some spots of mold on the drywall above the tile. Do you run an exhaust fan after using the shower?
Yes, exhaust is run. The picture is supposed to show the grout darkening due to potentially being wet. I have pointed the area that is darker in the picture here.
The spots on the drywall are just scuffs. They were there when we moved in as well.
Basically, I'm trying to figure out why this grout is darker than the rest? Grout gets darker when wet but it is sealed from the top. Could it potentially be getting wet from th back end due to a leak? If yes, what is the best way to detect for such a leak?
If you are concerned about the joint next to the drywall, this may not be grout at all but matching sanded caulk. That's what it should be. Although it is made to match the grout the match isn't always exact. It is flexible and this may be why you think it is not drying. If this is the case there is nothing to be concerned about,.
To check for a leak at the spout to pipe connection in the wall. Pull the escutcheon away from the wall. Stuff some paper towel in the hole of the drywall, around the pipe and fitting. Run shower a couple minutes w/o getting the paper wet.
Shut off, pull the paper and see if wet. If wet, remove pipe nipple, wrap threads a couple times with Teflon tape. Reinstall.
Thank you! Will give this a shot!!
