Thanks Joe and Ron for the feedback,maybe I should have stated what I had in mind when I asked the question.The reason I was was asking about load bearing is because I own a jeep with a hard top.I want to build a beam that would span about 20 feet accross the garage so that I can raise the top with a chain lever hoist.The top weighs about 180 pounds.I was was going to laminate either 2X4’s or 2X6’s to gain strenght,any ideas would be greatly appreciated…Thanks…Ray Toro.

You are better off increasing the beam depth than laminating to greater width. From your point of view sagging is not too much of an issue. 20' is a pretty good span, but your load is very small. I'd use a 2x8.
