nice....
Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming<!----><!----><!---->
WOW!!! What a Ride!Forget the primal scream, just ROAR!!!

Great job! Did you used the help of a kitchen designer? How about the lighting?
One thing I have not seen in this site is linoleoun that may have asbestos. My kitchen has one that is over thity years. I am afraid to touch it. Any experience with his i your remodeling?
Your kitchen looks beautiful.
Ok, during demo where is the sledge hammer like the home shows? You know where your crew starts smashing all the cabinets. And then where is the pile of cabinets and debri out side the back door so you walk through it while you are going out to cut? Until Manny (or other demo contractor) shows up to get it out of the way.
Nice work and really well kept site. You have my admiration, which combined with a couple of bucks will get you a cup of coffee most places. But it really is a great looking job and site. DanT

- we were fortunate on this one - client had his own hauling trailer, parked right outside the back door for much of the job - and he hauled the debris off! Here's the old cabinets sitting outside.View Image “Good work costs much more than poor imitation or factory product†– Charles GreeneCaliforniaRemodelingContractor.com

Thanks. We did not use a designer, as the client had a pretty clear idea of what they wanted, the changes were minimal, and we winged it on the rest. The lighting was laid out by my electrician, he has a pretty good feel for what works best. This floor had asbestos I'm pretty sure - we just put our new floor right over it. My understanding is that its only dangerous in dust form - pretty harmless otherwise.View Image “Good work costs much more than poor imitation or factory product†– Charles GreeneCaliforniaRemodelingContractor.com
Thanks Huck. Once again, beautiful job.
Nicely organized and great results.
Huck, how did you prepare the existing vinyl floor to ensure thinset adhesion...or did you guys lay/glue down those newfangle tiles that look like they have real grout lines - I don't know what they're called?
how did you prepare the existing vinyl floor to ensure thinset adhesion
My tile guy nails cement-board over a thin layer of thinset, then mesh tapes and thinsets the joints, then tiles over that with thinset mixed with acrylic. The existing subfloor here is 1x6 diagonal sheathing with 3/4" plywood over, virtually no flex at all.

HuckMy mother would like to know what cabinets you used? Wood, stain & are they custom?Decisions, decisions. Potential new job is 5USD/hr more than unemployment but the same pay as 2 jobs ago. ugh
My mother would like to know what cabinets you used? Wood, stain & are they custom?
Yes, they are custom, from a local shop. Frame and flat panel, alder wood, melamine interior, stain is minwax english chestnut, sprayed lacquer finish.View Image “Good work costs much more than poor imitation or factory product†– Charles GreeneCaliforniaRemodelingContractor.com
Nice results. The outfit I used to work for - they never touched tilework, so they missed out on a lot of design opportunities for tile patterns and the like. Clients would pick their tiles and get them installed on their own initiative, sometimes with surprising aesthetic consequences. Also, our cabinet installer always worked alone. I sometimes had fantasies about a gang of guys getting in and completing a job with dispatch! Homeowners can't ever have the kitchen back soon enough.Good lookin' job!
Thanks. The diagonal pattern tile was an upgrade from my original bid - which went from sheet vinyl, to tile on a square layout, then to the diamond layout. I think I charged about 1800.00 for the upgrade (over the sheet vinyl), and it should have been more. My tile guy had forgotten how much extra work the diagonal layout creates - I worked with him a little on the tile work, and I could definitely see how it would inflate both the labor and materials costs.
Also, he went with a small grout line, and it would have been better to go with a 1/4" grout line with those big 20" tiles. Homeowner nit-picked him on two tiles, which we had to bust out and re-do because of a tiny "kicker" edge, but overall he did an awesome job and it looks fantastic in person.
She went with a granite countertop, and tile backsplash with a decorative border. They made me tile all the way behind the freestanding stove, which I didn't bid, but I ate that one - they were good customers.
My cabinet guys are great. They built, stained and lacquered the cabinets in about a week, and installed them in a day. Their install price is 10% of the cabinet price. But they did charge me $400 extra for using alder wood instead of oak, even though I told them alder from the beginning. I could have argued with them, but hey, like I said, they're great guys, fast and do good work. Sometimes you have to choose your battles.
There were issues with the granite install too, but all said and done the homeowner is very happy, and she's got a really beautiful kitchen.View Image “Good work costs much more than poor imitation or factory product†– Charles GreeneCaliforniaRemodelingContractor.com
he's using a morticer, don't know what the box is
Can you hold the laser level while I shave?
Looks like an onsite line bore.
