Been awhile since I’ve spent some time here. Thought I would share some before and after pics of a place I bought 3 years ago. It’s really just what I needed, nothing special, just great scenery in the mountains. The place is only 1100 sf but ideal for me. I’m simple.
And somebody warned about chiggers a few years ago (no clue what they were then) when I asked for some advice. No problem last summer. I was wearing shorts all the time. This year? Different story. What’s up with them critters?

Heaven.

Wow, I'd say you have been busy! Looking great. Funny, I'm from Bucks/Montgomery Pa. too, and I did MY cabin in NC not far from there in Ga.
Working on a new project in Ky now, the Smokies and surrounds were getting too crowded.
Keep it up, it's swell life living in the sticks.
As to chiggers, nothing I know can be done except keep outta the weeds and woods..LOL

Chiggers-OSHA approved remedy-Avon Skin so Soft --seriously
Seriously, Skin So Soft does NOT work at all in many areas. Very limited area and types of bugs. Maybe a regular fly will shy away. But the mean nasty mosquitoes, and no seeums.... they drink Skin So Soft and then throw the bottle at you and ask for more!
Quantum materiae materietur marmota monax si marmota monax materiam possit materiari?
I'd take mosquitoes anyday over these critters...except that one weekend in Everglades City, Fla. The moment the sun set, forget it. Step oustide and they'd be in your ears and up your nose...seriously.
Unbelievable!
...great fishing but the drawbacks
never thought to google chiggers but have you read this?

I bet a good dose of a grub killer would work as well.
I was referring strictly to chiggers. which I did not even know about until moving to the south.
Wow, looks amazing, excellent job.
Sphere:
This area is much like Central Bucks in the 60's when it was almost in the sticks. I hear ya on the Smokies. I went through Gatlinburg a few months ago. It's all commercialized and I saw one log home sub division that was ridiculous. Stacked on top of one another it seemed, off the main drag. Who wants to vacation in a log cabin in the "city?"
Chigger Remedy?
Or preventive? I'm okay with long pants and boots, but those buggers sometimes get into the underwear area..only. Grrrr
Hey thanks for the comments folks. I've never had a place of my own to work on before, but always dreamed of it. I've always rented until I bought this place.
There was a thread a while ago about chiggers...try the search function. Seems you're not alone; someone else was complaining about a bad chigger year.
Nice place.
I have to ask...What's a HardwoodGuy doing building pine stairs?? LOL
Scott.

"What's a HardwoodGuy doing building pine stairs?? LOL"
Because the rest of the place has pine floors. I never did really like the stuff but it did grow on me. At one point in time I was in love with clear grade hardwoods, but now I'm more of a country rustic fella.
search function comes up empty.

Well, but no cure. Some more talk over here.
I've ridden grassy mountain bike trails and hiking trails for years in NE PA's tick country (Pike County), wearing sweat pants with snug elastic at the ankles and socks without ever finding a tick on my body afterwards.
Considering the large deer population there, a favorite target for ticks in grassy woodlands, I'm convinced that dressing in that way has kept me safe from ticks, especially from Lime Disease.
Of course chiggers are smaller than ticks so you may need to wear the socks over the sweatpant legs to keep them out. I'd try both inside and outside if I was suffering from chigger bites. Maybe flea powder in the socks would work.
We had a houseboat on Fontana Lake in the Smokies and if you had to go #2 it was swim to the woods. We later added a septic system, but thats another tale of hilarity.
Anyway, they were the meanest chiggers you ever did see, or not see as the case was.
The ONLY way I found to avoid them was (A) Stay in the water. And (B) never set foot or anything else on shore.
No sprays, no deet, no fire and smoke..nothing stopped them lil chiggers from getting ya.
I've had a few this season here in KY, the first inmy 6 yrs here, but nothing like down there, maybe they gravitate to southern climes? I don't think I ever had one in Pa. That I can recall.Spheramid Enterprises Architectural Woodworks

I spent a couple summers in mosquito country, Western Ontario's lake region. It was pretty much the same as what you're talking about. The only way to avoid getting bitten was to stay on the water or in the water.
I was talking to a farmer in my yard and he kept moving around so i asked him what he was doing. He said if you keep moving chiggers won't get on you.
I'm not sure if he was right or not. Old farmers can have some funny ideas. But you never know.
It looks like you've been moving!

Try this for chiggers. One bottle of Avon Skin So Soft mixed with equal amount of water. Make sure you cut it with water, works better than used straight. This is an old time greenhead fly repellent that works on every bug I have run into. Avon does not make any claims that their product is a bug repellent, but Jersey shore fisherman swear by it. I have been using it for at least 25 years.
The cabin is a beaut.

It must only work in Joysey. :-)Doesn't work here at all.

A lot of people around here use it, but I hadn't heard of cutting with water. You smell like a french ***** when you wear it. :)
Well I think chigger season is at an end...at least North Ga. Great to wear shorts again.
It's about time for us to STOP wearing shorts up here in the great plains - at least it's getting close to that time. I used to live down by Savannah, GA, but I have to admit I missed the winter weather up here.
I may be crazy, but it's home. :)
