porch project.
a before pic … and took one today “during”
forgot to take one after I trimmed the boards to length.
after my concrete bud pours the walk I’ll have some steps there too.
then trim … maybe some railings … etc.

The before pic looks saggy in the middle of the porch. Is that real or an optical illusion?

My advice to you is not to inquire why or whither, but just enjoy your ice cream while it's on your plate-- Thornton Wilder
the pics don't show it nearly as bad as it was.
we left a little "character" up there ...
but pushed it up a good 1 1/4 inch in the middle.
also found the carp ants nest at the bottom of the old post.

worked with a buddy who's a former framing lead.
think I finally caught my breath on the third day around noon or so!
he's good "help" to hire ...
makes me actually run around and work.

That kinda stuff is deceptively time consuming, hence my quip. BTDT.

so U were there last Fri, huh?
actually ... had the deck all laid ... just planned on running another band across the front and cut/set the temp stairs on the side.
plus ... only real plans for the day ... set the new columns.
they were to be delivered between 9am and 11am.
so when they showed up around 3pm we were really happy to finally see them!
called at 11:30 ... they were still there and the truck was on it's way back.
took a nice long .... long ... long lunch ... then rested when we got back to the site.
shoulda been home before rush hour traffic even started ...
oh well.

Beautiful and long-lasting job I'm sure.
On the topic--timing--it'd be really cool to see what went into a project like yours there. Not just how long it took but what sort of prep, what material, where sourced, what cost, how finished...
on and on.
well that's easy ...
just book a porch job and take notes!

I want to read YOUR notes!
;-)
nothing exciting there ...
knock down old and build new.
somewhere along the way call Ed, my framin' buddy to help speed things up.

That's the kind of work I like to see!
What Sas said!
I like seeing these old porches saved, no reason for them to fall off the house and get replaced with a "deck looking" replacement.
Good job!
Doug
yeah ... appearantly I'm a "traditional porch" expert of some sort.
customer said he called 5 companies before he got my name.
2 tried to sell decks over the phone.
2 came out and tried to sell decks.
and one was gonna build a porch and said he'd get the columns off the shelf at home depot!
he got my name from asking a deck company at a builders show. Said he was starting to think is he called remodelers and they wanted to sell decks ...
maybe he'd talk to a deck guy and see what he wanted to sell.
deck guy gave him my name.
it was an easy close ... we talked over the phone ...
I said I'd just take pics of the front porch I grew up on , and had rebuilt in HS.
20 yrs later it's still there ... musta done something right!
my favorite part of redoing a porch is leaving the roof hang up there on a coupla 2x12's for a week or so ...

"my favorite part of redoing a porch is leaving the roof hang up there on a coupla 2x12's for a week or so ..."
My favorite part is sitting down on it after it's done with an ice cold beer. (Porch sittin' is my favorite pastime.)
Nice job. Why'd ya go with round columns instead of replacing the square?
Mike HennessyPittsburgh, PA
round is what they probably started with. (coupla clues left in the neighborhood)
plus ... there's a nicely done porch down the street that the home owner really likes ... and they went round.

" and one was gonna build a porch and said he'd get the columns off the shelf at home depot!"
Nice looking work. I always wanted a 4-square with a porch. Anyways... who made
the columns? Just curious.
-D
I was going to ask that as well. HB&G ? Doing a clonial w/ wrap around porch right now....15 columns. Gonna get pricey, whether I make a boxed column around pt or fiberglass.
No, a clonial is not an exact duplicate of another house, it's a typo. :)
I think they are HB&G
all I know is I call my guy at the lumber yard and say I want those nice fiberglass columns and this is what he sends me.
my porch guy in the hood should feel pretty good about his columns ... just spent the day working a tile job on a "close to a million" dollar house ... and they have the same columns on their front porch.

It looks like you changed the spacing on them...?
yeah ... we made them spaced even.
existing were all off.
even the original framing was crooked ... they had a carry beam coming out from the house ... at a severe angle ... onto a pier ... off center with the post above it.
weird ... if they just shot it out fairly straight ... it would have landed just about where the existing post was ... and probably would have supported it enough ...
and probably would have avoided the water damage ... which led to severe rot ...
which led to ant damage.
someone went to alot of work to build it wrong.

I wondered if the original spacing was to give a straight shot into the front door. I'll be interested to see how you handle the rail since i had to make something similar last year for the woman who bought my Victorian. What an eclectic collection of railings they had before...
here's a pic of the rail stock.
home owner is gonna hit Construction Junction, our used #### place ...
to scavange some wrought iron rails of some sort.
I'll dado out the wood and run it as top rails, set over the iron.
