I’ve just been hired to repair a home in NY which was seriously damaged during a wind storm when a large tree fell on the roof. Most of the repairs are straight forward, except for the re-building (replacing) of a 6 foot diameter by 8 foot high cupola. My concern with building the cupola is the bell shaped copper roof (fyi: I’m meeting with my roofer tomorrow.) The architect’s plans only call for rafters going from the outer perimeter to the center of the cupola. Then the copper roof will sit on the rafters.

It seems to me that I should build a better support for the copper. Do you agree? I’ve never built a bell shaped roof before….any suggestions.

I'd refuse to install copper without sheathing. It's not a structural member - It's a roof covering.

Grant pretty well summed it up and I would agree. Half inch ply or 9/16" osb should do, assuming 16" oc rafters. The architect and homeowner SHOULD appreciate your quality minded approach and attention to detail.
