Greetings folks,
I’m in the market for a cordless circular saw. I’d like to get your opinions on make, voltage, etc.

Bill,
I have the DeWalt 14.4 model. Fairly nice design, fits well in the hand, base plate fairly well machined. I really can only use it for light duty, though. It snacks on battery power, and bogs down very easily on all but the thinnest stock. You definately have to baby it through a cut. That being said, it can be very helpful when you're on top of a ladder with no extension cord, or you need to make one quick cut. Tell everyone what you're going to be using it for, and people can give you their experiences.
Hope this helps
Ben
I have the Bosch 24V . I has amazing power for Cordless. I have Ripped 2x4's and it does this with no problem. Very well built.
I'm happy with the 19.2 volt porter cable it came in a kit with drill and flashlight and two batteries. the best thing i did was pick up a third battery ($75.00). cordless tools are a waste of time and money when you have no batteries charged. my favorite thing about the kit is the flashlight it has its own spot in the case and it is just great to always have a working flashlight available. The one thing i didn't like about the kit was the size of the case. It was huge. for $29.00 i bought a smaller case direct from porter cable which fits the drill and light and i keep the saw separate in my truck toolboxes.
I have the 12 volt Makita, and also their 12 volt drill. If I were starting fresh, I'd definitely go for something with more power. It's great for getting wild ends of deck planks out of your way in the attic, but you can't cut two by stuff unless you have access to both sides. The sheet metal plate feels flimsy, it's definitely not for precision work. With the diamond blade, it's nice for making clean cuts into old plaster.
Give some consideration to the other cordless tools you might want some day, and pick a make and voltage that will allow you to stock only one kind of battery for all of them.

Cut composite decking.$ Bill
Stihl makes one w/ a 14" blade.
Lots of power.
Puts out too much blue smoke to use indoor though.

I've got the Dewalt 18v drill/light/saw kit. I've been pleased with it for three years but think next time I'll go for the Porter Cable 19.2 kit with the same tools. It does cut 2"x stock but kills a battery pretty quickly. I've also used it for patching sheathing on a roof, cutting metal siding with the blade turned backwards, installed more windows than I can remember, and done some cabinet work with it. All in all, a decent tool but I know there are better out there and I'll be getting one of them in the next few years.
