best framing nail, clipped head or full
I am just about to start my first major building project, a garage, and I need to get my own framing nailer. I started a handyman business last year and now have moved to bigger projects, so now I need bigger tools.

congrats on your bigger job...
my choice for you is...
paslode frame'n gun... no hose no compressor... and it's faster than you are
clipped nail = more nails per strip in the gun... yes it matters
full head (round) nail = more holding surface
not where i am but i understand in some areas clipped heads do not meet code... so you might want to check with your area inspector....
I use clipped head all day everyday because thats the gun i have (paslode) i have just about every brand air frame'n gun there is... i just never even consider use'n em for frame'n because just not worth the trouble for me to mess with a hose & compressor.... i will use them for decking where you want to bump nail and have alot of it to do......
the real answer is... any air or impluse nailer is better/faster than hand nail'n
good luck

I think most of the west coast doesn't allow clipped head nails. Check with your local building codes. If in doubt, full round head nails should meet all codes, I would have to assume. Most of the guys I work with use Hitatchi nailers, and I've been pretty impressed with them. I'll eventually pick one up.

Mike,
If you go with the Impulse hoseless framer, Paslode sells special round head nails that meet code here in seismic land. The heads are eccentric on the shank, but they have model code approvals. They are branded as "Roundrive" nails, only sold by Paslode AFAIK. Even available at the Depot here.

Buy yourself a coil framing gun, they hold alot of nails. And they have full round heads.
I have 2 Bostitch and 1 Paslode coil gun all are good guns, for the money the Bostitch is a great gun. I got them for around $200. Probably around $250 regularly.
I care, after all it's my company.
